Daily Pilots Post: And one time, at band camp...

Pilots love music.  Or maybe music loves Pilots?  I wouldn't blame it for a second if that were the case.  Anyways, taragel  discussed General Pilot Songs with us a while ago.

It got me thinking...  There are some songs that make me think of Pilots, but don't really fit for the entirety of their story.  I call them “Snapshot Songs.”  They fit for a particular story arc, or maybe even just for one moment.

For example:

This is Lee, that night on New Caprica, or in Eye of Jupiter while he's trying to convince her to leave Sam.  It's Kara in Taking a Break From All Your Worries (though she can't come right out and say it because it scares her so), or maybe in Maelstrom.  Somewhere in that arc.  They've realized that it's not worth pretending, and running away won't work.  They want something simple and fabulous.  Or as simple as it could ever get for Pilots.

Lee, in the Son Also Rises.  He felt so much guilt over her death, which makes his inability to let himself just grieve her that much more painful.

So, let's make a game of this.  You provide some lyrics and/or a song title and artist, we try to figure out the arc or moment that it applies to.  Here are a couple to get us started:

That Lifehouse song, to me, is the exact moment after Lee kisses Kara after she gets back from Caprica - when he's staring at her like he can't believe he kissed her at the same time he can't believe he waited so long.

I read those words and I think of the godsawful poof. But then, I've never actually heard the song and I'm in a really bad mood tonight, so it might not have much to do with the song.

I like that connection, but something different popped in my head.

To me, its totally crossroads. Its Lee refusing to take his wings back from his father, and its the brig scene. But like I said above, I'm in a pretty bleak mood tonight, although this one I have actually heard.

"Hanging by a Moment" describes that exact moment in EoJ that Lee tells Kara they have to divorce. He's so hopeful, so in love with her and putting it all on the line. (It could also apply to Kara coming to Lee asking if he'll leave Dee, but there was never enough about her inner thoughts to know.)

Gah. Just thinking about it breaks my heart. :(

The Lifehouse song is the scene where Kara asks "Will you still leave Dee if I leave Sam".

Break Even has to be when Kara flies into the Maelstrom.

I do find it interesting how we all seem to read the same words and think it fits entirely different parts of the series. Its almost like we've watched the episodes repeatedly and thought about them more than the writers did :p

It's interesting how certain songs get associated with certain moments and then we don't see the other moments they fit.

I think, to me, that Break Even applies to one Pilot or the other from UB right up through Maelstrom. It's Lee, walking away from Kara, the morning after on New Caprica, it's Kara asking Lee to leave Dee, It's Lee after he's said no. It's Kara while they're sitting under the wing of her Viper, and it's absolutely Lee when she flies into the Maelstrom. It kills me every time.

Again, an excellent scene for the Lifehouse song, but not the one I had in mind.

Your's is hard...

I'm going to say Lee... And I'm going to say Eye of Jupiter, when he says they should leave their spouses and she says no. He's so damn hopeful that she's finally going to come to him, and he's held his breath for so long and... she doesn't.

I'm not recognizing any of these songs from the lyrics...

The second one feels like either the moment Kara opens her door and they first meet, or the moment he helps her up from under her Viper in the mini. Early in the relationship, either way. Maybe both. Just the wonder and the crystal clarity, before everything got murky and weird.

The last one makes me think of the "I missed you" moment at the end of UB. Oh, achy Pilots. Why must you wrench the heart so?

Can I play too?
There is a song by Mexican singer Julieta Venegas that makes me think of a moment between our lovely pilots. Here is a (possible) translation:

Oh, yes, I should say what the lyrics are from...the first is from Sting's "Into the Labyrinth" album, and I've always considered it the perfect song for Scar ~ Lee's frustrated with Kara for always going back and forth, giving her trust and then snatching it back, but ultimately that stormy, thundering, bright and mercurial quality in her is what keeps him coming back :)

The second is Avril Lavigne's "Who Knows," just the lyrics without the chorus. I agree that it's an early getting-to-know-you song about Kara's perspective on Lee ~ what she likes, and what she notices, and the way that she knows he hasn't figured himself out yet.

The last is Dashboard Confessional's "Brilliant Dance." I think of it as Kara reacting to Zak's death and being aware of Lee awkwardly skating around her, both of them carefully sidestepping and Kara just feeling very burned out on the prospect of loving anyone ever again.

But UB could fit well, too, especially with the dance reference!

Lifehouse could have written an entire Pilots soundtrack for me and "Everything" has always been one of my favorites.

"You calm the storms, and you give me rest
You hold me in your hands, you won't let me fall..."

"You're all I want, you're all I need, you're everything"

They're both protective of each other, they pick each other up, they have moments where you can tell they are the only two people in the world that matter. For me the song took on it's ultimate meaning during the Six of One brig scene.

Even if they didn't run off together, their words, faces and the kiss layed it all out there for me.

I originally thought that those lyrics were perfect for the flashback scene in UB when Kara and Sam are walking towards Lee after their marriage. I always thought that they both could be thinking this.

As for a moment... Sitting together under Kara's viper wing, maybe? When she's so broken and trying so hard to pretend she's not, and just wishing she could reach out to him? Or maybe Scar. Ooo... I think that's a better fit. Yup. The aborted encounter/slap-kiss in Scar.
