Daily Pilots Post: Shipping Essentials

So I realized just a bit ago during a discussion with sci_fi_shipper at her journal that sometimes, even with all the interaction we have in our corner of the fandom each day, we take it for granted that everyone's on the same page. But of course we're not. Some have always hung out on LJ, while others called skiffy home first. Some of us have been around since the beginning of the first season or perhaps one of the hiatuses from hell (like yours truly), while others have arrived more recently. And though being new means you probably have not gotten into any fandom drama yet, it also means you may not be aware of some of the community's history and highlights.

Which brings me to today's topic: let's make this post a newbie Mecca, shall we? I'd love to see comments from as many people out there as possible--give us the goods! Share pics, gifs, vids, fics, or meta posts you think people NEED to have seen/read to consider themselves K/L fans, even if you think everyone already knows about them--because you just never know! Link to people and posts that have helped make pilot-shipping what it is today, fic rec resources, etc. Dispense advice and/or warnings about The Pit, attending cons, etc. Whatever you think could be helpful to a newbie (or even to a veteran shipper!) is welcome.

All I ask is that we try to keep things positive and respectful. Let's focus on all the great things it has meant and continues to mean to be a Kara/Lee shipper. :) All right, now let's have some fun with this!

One of the people who always comes to mind when I think about the history of K/L fandom (at least as I've learned about it) is rawles. Her meta about them was always top-notch, of course, but just going back through her 2005 entries especially is always a blast. Her stuff is awesome because she was watching live from Season 1 on and would pretty much liveblog her thoughts about it (as here: miniseries reactions (http://rawles.livejournal.com/107698.html#cutid1)). So interesting to me, since I watched the first 3 seasons in one big rush on DVD and obviously had no part in the fandom at that time. rawles is also responsible in part for the term "pilots," so...yeah. Homage must be paid.

It's funny, I joined fandom in the hiatus after season 3, but I think I've been here longer than most in this comm...weird. I don't know about fandom history so much, but I suppose I have some tips for finding fic.

I was astonished to find that, in the last post, there were people who had not read Benevolent Sibling. What is this madness? It is the definition of Must Read! Other "essential" fics...perhaps Twelve (http://rheanna27.livejournal.com/40930.html). Intra (http://svilleficrecs.livejournal.com/102660.html). Everything by mercurial_wit, sangga, daphnaea, leda13, bantha_fodder, stars_like_dust, brynnmck, wisteria_, suffolkgirl, hackaddict and a million others.

When I started reading fic, I got most of my launching points from an old thread of recs on TWOP, which pointed to a lot of authors who are no longer active in the fandom, like some of the above and also meyerlemon, trinnifer, voleuse, rawles (who thrace_adama already wisely mentioned) and many I'm forgetting. Oh, thefannishwaldo (some of the best humor pieces). I started with those authors, for the most part, and read all of their fics and all the of the people on their flists' fics. I also haunted people's Memories to see what fics they have bookmarked (still do, sometimes, but now I've already read it all).

whatimages made an enormous POST OF REC (http://whatimages.livejournal.com/101468.html) that has some great older fic. The list is from 2005, so I think it's all season 1 (and probably spec for season 2).

In terms of navigating fanfiction.net, I posted a list of recs a few weeks ago (and many people pointed out other worthy stories in the comments) here (http://shah-of-blah.livejournal.com/34251.html).

Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention shuchong's Polish the Stars, which was the very first bsg fic I read. I still consider it to be one of the definitive Academy pilots stories (along with personal favorites like All Feelings But This One and Decline and Fall/Circumstance). Unfortunately, it's unfinished, but the ten existing chapters are utterly fabulous. Also unfortunately, they're kinda hard to find on her lj. Fear not! I know what you mean--I feel like a lot of the people who hang around here are newer too. Maybe just because a lot of those who've been around longer aren't as interested in rewatching? Not sure. But I've been around for about two and a half years now, and really, just seeing others excited to be here is often enough to get me more excited about things too, which is nice. I'm so glad Bee and Cosette started this comm!

I watched the whole series in 39 days starting on New Years Eve, and was floored by the amount of activity left in the fan community a year(!) after the show ended. It's great that newer shippers can come and they have a place where they can find what they are looking for.

That's one of the great things about K/L shipper community, we take people in and no one ever feels like they are new. You become part of the group instantaneously. That's how I felt.

Good times were definitely had, but I wouldn't worry, 'cause at the same time, it can be nice to be able to have all that history right there at your fingertips when you join a fandom, you know? Those first weeks and months of my BSG fandom experience were intense 'cause I got to dive into a ton of fic and meta and stuff that'd already been written. In real time, as I've discovered since then, new stuff comes along at a much slower rate. So I say: embrace your newbie status! And let me know if I can in any way help you jump in. :)

BSG has been one of those shows that I kept meaning to watch but always kept putting off for one reason or another, then Netflix made all 4 seasons available streaming instantly and very recently over the course of 2 weeks I spent HOURS watching back to back episodes, so here in the last month I've been diving into the fandom and really appreciate thing like rec lists. There's many good (but let's face it, also many awful) fics, vids, caps, etc. So I like a good solid post with many people's recs to get me started. :)

Oh, you're welcome! So glad people are still finding and making use of this post. I didn't discover BSG until after Season 3 had aired, so I spent some blissful days and weeks and months catching up on both the show and the fandom. Really miss those days!

You're right, there is some not-so-great fic out there. When I was catching up I used to find a good writer and then read all of his/her stuff and then read everything that person ever recced too, lol. That was a good way to learn who the top-quality writers were and where to find more of their stuff.

Some of my favorite writers, just to name a few, are taragel, rayruz, stars_like_dust, innibis (her frakked-up fairytales are just magnificent--I do so hope she writes more), wisteria_, mercurial_wit (aka fahye), rawles, and elzed. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any questions or anything. We do love a reason to wheel out the welcome wagon around here. :)
