For today, look back at your oldest journal entries or NT comments about Pilots. What feelings or thoughts did you write about pilots that are no longer true for you? (For example, I used to hate the 33 smack-mouth scene, but now I kind of adore it.) I'd love it if you'd post a snippet of old thoughts and feelings and then talk about them. I am curious! <3

What shifts in your thinking have you made over the years? Any particular pieces of meta, fic, or comments that shifted your thinking? How did it happen? Are you still torn about any scenes? Any characterization moments?

This is almost hilarious in hindsight, but back when I was watching Daybreak, about 45 minutes after I was done, I remember commenting somewhere that I appreciated Lee and Kara's last scene in the field, and what it meant for her as a character.

Then my brain kicked in and got the full implications of it, and the RAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE set in.

I still don't love Scar. Kara being so messed up and destructive is really hard for me, but I have come to really appreciate the way Lee tries to take care of her, watching out for her and being there for her on her terms when she needs it.

Off the top of my head, I'd say one of the things that fandom kind of sold me was the idea that Kara slept around and used sex as a coping mechanism (along with running and fighting).

When I watched the show, I really didn't get that vibe. I mean I didn't see her as prudish or anything, but one dead fiancee,one one night stand, one mostly platonic long standing relationship with your soulmate, one one night(week) stand with a hot guy while running for your life, one steady relationship with said hot guy and the following marriage, one single night and much later some kind of affair with said soulmate didn't immediately translate as "Kara sleeps around" to me.

Yeah, agreed. I really wanted her to be my heroine who had casual sex without being vilified for or damaged by it! And I was like "....that's it?" So I didn't need the same convincing from fandom by any means, but I really agree that it's not substantiated by canon. It kind of disturbs me, that this kind of trajectory for the character was what was intended to show, and was perceived as, "Kara sleeps around."

It's okay. I used to hate Zarek with a fire from the pits of hell and now he's part of one of my favorite ships. Thank the gods for cognitive flexibility. LOL. ;)

VOCALLY AND OBNOXIOUSLY, as is my way. I did reaction posts as I watched, too, and throughout my S2.5 posts there's this, like, creeping sense of horror that I was starting to find him sympathetic. Then he was one of my POV characters throughout S3, and probably my favorite after Laura by the end. I still like him a lot better in the later seasons than in those first 20 or so episodes, but overall he's an all-time favorite for me. COOL STORY SIS.

I used to dislike Scar and then when I was writing Kara more, finally found some love for it. I also like Vulnerable!Kara, despite what it means overall for her character.

I was *blush* reading some of my old comments and I was struck by how much I agonized over Lee's decision to stay with Dee. I couldn't understand it, lamented over it, flamed his choice in a post, and just couldn't get it. That was almost three years ago. Two years ago (mostly as I wrote a fic about it), I finally understood it. It was really a relief, even though I think he made the wrong (safe) choice (that didn't work out anyway). *SIGH*

I do really like the more vulnerable side of Kara, I think often it's forgotten or overlooked in place of tough!Kara. There are some really beautiful moments for her that I've come to really appreciate.

I still dislike teh way they try to shoe horn Sam back into her life. Much like the way Gianne comes out of nowhere for Lee in Blackmarket, the memories of Sam feel out of place and forced.

Do you think it would be easier to understand Lee's choice if Dee hadn't ended up leaving him anyway? I've always kind of thought that. That her leaving him when he's becoming his own person kind of makes the choice to stay togther throughout the affair seem false, on both sides.

Long time lurker, seldom poster, but had to chime in here and say that since BSG was my first fandom ever, I was initially very squeamish about fanfic, smut in particular. If I wasn't on my phone I'd try to grab a funny post I did once, but alas. Needless to say, now I almost never bother with fanfic unless it's porn. With a couple like Kara/Lee as my OTP, I almost had to get the sex in fanfic since we didn't get much on the show, so now I really appreciate it, fandom and my place as a con-going geek all the more :)

Yeah, it's a fairly rare thing for me too. It was reassuring in a way? I'm always afraid I'm missing out on angles of the story if I pick a favorite/POV character and stick to them too soon. But changing my mind in such a big way about Lee made me feel like I watch with some willingness to question my own biases. (Naturally, this has only made me more insufferable wrt characters I have continued to like/dislike.) It was a really fun journey with Lee in particular, as he's very close to my heart now.

It's funny, because I still agree with most of the extremely unsympathetic first post I wrote about him (http://pocochina.livejournal.com/128511.html) but now I find his bullheadedness endearing. BB. <3

I have discovered over the years that I appreciate when others love characters that I do not. It makes me feel better about that whole character's existence if someone really gets them even if I don't. But it has never once prevented me from going off on how I still dislike said character and find them awful and ill conceived. hee.
