DPP: Domestic Pilots

Today, let's talk about the domestic side of pilots. What would their ideal dwelling be? Big house? Little house? Apartment? Houseboat? Are their ideals compatible with each other? :D

What would their living arrangement be like? Who'd be in charge of what chores? Cooking? Yardwork?

Or would they just travel around and live in a camper? :p

In my story, I imagined Kara designing and building a house for Lee to live in. The fact that she's not an engineer/architect (small details!) aside, that seemed sorta right; Kara would want some more control over the space. It feels like Lee could live anywhere, particularly anywhere Kara is and he has a reasonably satisfying job.

I'm referring to my "big sprawly mess" of a "saving canon and Earth from Ron Moore by reversing everything he did wrong" fic, In the Whole World (http://pennyante.livejournal.com/792.html), currently a WIP. If you want to read the relevant scene with the house reveal, though, it's around Chapter 13/14, I think? I understand people not wanting to get involved with a WIP, it can be frustrating. :)

Actually, in terms of actual home, I could see Kara and Lee liking something very similar. Very much Kara's apartment in Delphi only more upscale.

I always think of them as apartment dwellers, somehow - they seem like they'd be more at home in the city. I've seen some lovely stories with them in houses or cabins, but in my headcanon they always live in an apartment/flat. (maybe one big enough to keep a dog or cat, but that's about as upscale as I imagine them being)

You know, that does make sense. (It's funny, I mostly asked this question because I wasn't sure myself!) I'm not even sure if Lee lived in a house or an apartment. For some reason, I always interpret that scene as a house but I'm not sure it's clear from the scene (the pigeon).

I normally rule out the actual house thing since it's way too expensive for most 20somethings in a major city, and also houses take a lot of upkeep/maintenance - for Kara and Lee's stage of life, they'd more likely just want to pay rent and have their space.

Yeah, I remember being surprised by the bit in Daybreak - the ceiling looks so high. That's why I thought it was a house.

it might have been an older building (BSG equivalent of pre-1940s buildings), even the apartments in those days tended to have higher ceilings.

Or maybe that's just the way all the apartments are, Kara's place had that staircase leading down from the doorway too and iirc that did create a higher-than-usual ceiling.
