DPP: Pilots Without The War

As someone who has an unholy passion for the 'what ifs', one of my favourite pilots-related subjects to think about is - what would pilots have been like, if the Cylons hadn't attacked the Colonies?

And as an additional question, what might they have been like if she hadn't passed Zak on that Basic Flight test? I'll helpfully provide a gif from before all of it:



Feel free to also discuss the impact being at war did have on their relationship, and the constraints it put on them, both emotionally and otherwise (Lee having to order Kara to stay back with the detonator - and die in the process - in Razor, Kara leaving Lee because Tigh pointed out they were still at war and she could lose him).

And of course, if there is any fic that actually has Lee and Kara without the war (apart from the brilliant Aerilon Girls are Easy) please do rec it!

What if the cylons hadn't attacked is one of my favorite 'what ifs' because it feels like it could go any direction. It feels just as likely to me that Kara and Lee would never find reason to reconnect as them being pulled back into each other's lives regardless.

Kara not passing Zak adds a whole other wrinkle. Because I can't help but wonder if Zak would have ever forgiven her for dashing his dreams.

Before Daybreak, that was what I thought too, but after seeing how strong the attraction was from the moment they met, I choose to believe that it'd happen - maybe not immediately, but they would get back into each other's lives.

Kara and Zak, like you said, are another issue. He seemed like he was semi-prepared for her to fail him in AoC, but there are so many ways she and Lee could have gone if she did fail Zak.

It's also easy to forget that Lee goes to find Kara in the brig before the cylons attack so there's definitely something pulling them back into each other's orbit.

One of the things I really believe about Kara failing Zak is that it would make Kara deal with how her feelings for Lee effected her decision to fail Zak. For some reason I think having to face Zak would make that come out.

That's so true, they were reconnecting (albeit imperfectly) even before the war hit them, and it was pretty much the first thing he did as soon as he got on board Galactica.

Oh YES. This just makes me think of that shot of the photograph of the three of them in Kara's AoC flashback, there is no way she was not thinking of Lee - even if she was trying not to - just then.

Makes me think of the "Zak wasn't as nice as he seemed" recs you gave me recently. I also think Kara failing Zak would have brought Lee around to thank her for that so there's their chance to meet up.
