Hi, I'm Kara, this is Lee...
Jul. 14th, 2012 02:51 pmPilots have landed on Earth in our time. Your job is to show them the cool things we have.
Below are some threads for various things; films, books, places, etc. You, as their new Earthling BFF's, need to present them this world in all it's geeky and wondrous glory. Suggest stuff and say why Kara or Lee might like 'em. (I've left these light, but feel free to add more serious topics.)
This will also be up for tomorrow, so keep adding things to show PILOTS!
(Ps, as it's my last post as DPP, thank you for all being so lovely.)

MOVIES!
Date: 2012-07-14 01:52 pm (UTC)Re: MOVIES!
Date: 2012-07-15 10:43 am (UTC)I think he'd also be a big Monty Python fan, though that covers both tv and film, and maybe I'm just projecting because of Jamie's Britness, lol.
Kara, I can see her being interested in many things, including Chinese martial arts flicks (both the chop-socky HK action films and the operatic, 'doomed love' Wuxia films, but especially the latter) to Baz Luhrmann's R+J, to the films of Quentin Tarantino (bet she'd love Kill Bill), Terence Malick (The Tree of Life would be right up her street, The Thin Red Line up Lee's) and early Francis Ford Coppola/Martin Scorcese. And for appeal to her artistic side, she'd love Alfonso Cuarón for his gorgeous visuals, if not for the emotion of his films.
And I think she'd watch the Alien films with interest, if not liking - I can see her loving Ripley but having serious Farm flashback squicks. Though her secret love would probably be the entire back catalogue of Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki films (Grave of the Fireflies, My Neighbour Totoro, Nausicaa, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke etc)
(and of course, pilots would both have a LOT of fun at The Avengers, and they might like the Nolan Batman trilogy too)
wow, that was a lot of tl;dr.
TV SHOWS
Date: 2012-07-14 01:53 pm (UTC)Re: TV SHOWS
Date: 2012-07-14 03:23 pm (UTC)I also think Lee would love Sherlock and Yes, Minister, while Kara might be into Homeland. And of course, I think - being the brilliant, so many grey areas show that it is - they'd both love The Wire. (I also see Lee as a secret Downton Abbey fan, lol - historical geekery plus an Edwardian-era reflection of their own love story, he'd be all over it)
I also think Kara would secretly (as with so many things in her life) really like Sailor Moon, lol.

SONGS/ALBUMS/ARTISTS!

Date: 2012-07-14 03:29 pm (UTC)Lee, oddly, I can't really see him as a big music fan at all. He might like the Beatles or Simon & Garfunkel, though.

Date: 2012-07-14 01:56 pm (UTC)Kara, she loves reading. Give her something which touches that deeper side to her.

Hmm, I think she'd be secretly touched by The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, by Mark Haddon. It's an amazing novel about an autistic teenager who tries to emulate his idol Sherlock Holmes and figure out who killed his neighbor's dog with a pitchfork.
ETA: I don't have a huge basis for this but I think Lee might identify with the watchful (pining!) narrator of The Great Gatsby a bit. ;)
(Congrats on a really fun N_T first week too! I've been on vacation all week, so haven't gotten a chance to play as much as I would've liked, but it's all been really fresh and fun! yay!)
Re: BOOKS
Date: 2012-07-15 08:45 am (UTC)(Re congrats, thank you. I'm glad it all was okay ;)
Re: BOOKS
Date: 2012-07-14 04:30 pm (UTC)Lee might also become a fan of Terry Pratchett, he seems like the kind of person who'd love satire/the odd bit of political humour. And somehow I can also see them both as big fans of Haruki Murakami (Lee would probably identify a little with the narrators of Sputnik Sweetheart or South of the Border, West of the Sun).
(also I think my last comment was marked as spam for containing images - sorry!)

Date: 2012-07-14 03:38 pm (UTC)I can see Lee as a fan of some classical Japanese artists like Ogata Korin, but he might also be a fan of Edward Hopper or Rodin

Date: 2012-07-14 03:46 pm (UTC)Can't decide if Kara would like amusement parks--namely the thrill rides? I thought at first she'd like the rollercoasters and such, but she likes to be in control and even the best might seem tame after flying a Viper?

Date: 2012-07-14 04:37 pm (UTC)I can see them both as countryside lovers, though, in pretty much any country.
