After a bout of juvenile delinquency, Kara is assigned 50 hours of community service. She lands backstage at the local community center. It's just her luck that they're staging The Nutcracker Suite; between hordes of identical six-year-old extras, an obsessive director who's stolen all the chairs, and a Mouse King named Gaius who's decided he's God's gift, she is fast losing her mind. But then she meets the male lead, a senior on loan from the preppy liberal arts academy upstate. His name is Lee, and he's decked out as a toy soldier.

She likes a man in uniform.
