DPP: Birthdays and Holidays
Jan. 26th, 2012 09:32 amOo, Dana, how original! So, it's my birthday today (and yes, I signed up to do DPP this week just to celebrate!), and that of course leads me to thinking about birthdays in the BSG world. I don't recall them ever being mentioned at all. Come to think of it, there aren't even any holidays mentioned, except for Colonial Day. So, what do you think were some holidays that they celebrated? What did they do for their birthdays? What wonderfully delicious, or angsty, or goofy things did Kara and Lee get up to celebrate? Because you know, if anyone remembers birthdays, it has to be Lee Adama. (And Kara too, but she wouldn't let on that it was a big deal.)

Date: 2012-01-26 02:46 pm (UTC)I know I've read a couple birthday fics before. Even one where Kara got to have sex with Helo & Lee at the same time as a nice little birthday treat! Lol. I have no idea who wrote it but it was glorious and in my opinion, a superb birthday gift.
I even wrote a little snippet once where Kara and Lee had a longstanding tradition that they did as many shots as Lee was years old for his birthday which is HERE (http://word-vomity.livejournal.com/10019.html#cutid1)
As for holidays, I know I've read a fair amount of solstice fics, though I bookmark nothing so I don't know where. :( I am such a rubbish fan-girl. *is ashamed*
Happy Birthday Dana!!
Date: 2012-01-26 03:16 pm (UTC)I also love Daphnaea's It's Her Party (http://daphnaea.livejournal.com/3897.html) which is a much less porny, but wonderfully written one where Lee and Helo help Kara celebrate. "Stupid and screwed up as it may be, both of the men touching her love her, they’d frakking die for her, and she kind of hates that, but she kind of needs it too."
I wrote my own Kara birthday fic too: God's Gift (http://taragel.livejournal.com/104474.html#cutid1)! Lee tied up in her rack = surprise present! ;)

Date: 2012-01-26 09:06 pm (UTC)The solstice fic is the most that I see come up. I always think it would be interesting to take the ancient Roman holidays and someone work those into the calendar.

Date: 2012-01-26 03:51 pm (UTC)B)... I think at some point Mars Day is mentioned. I think Laura mentions it in her journal in Occupation. It does not sound like a massively happy holiday, not like Colonial Day... I'm pretty sure you can take any god and tack "Day" onto the end of it and make it a holiday in the BSGverse. I know so many people use "Eros Day" to replace Valentines in fic.

Date: 2012-01-26 08:11 pm (UTC)I thought that was just Tuesday? In the Romance languages the word for Tuesday comes from Mars (like Mardi in French).

Date: 2012-01-26 04:05 pm (UTC)Hmmm, some sweet things: I like the idea of Kara using those trick birthday candles for Lee--the ones that relight after they get blown out. I also like the idea of Kara and Lee having a shared journal where they write letters on each other's birthdays every year, and they're only allowed to read the letters the following year.

Date: 2012-01-26 07:16 pm (UTC)I don't know if they would celebrate birthdays in the mess their lives had turned into. But I guess one or the other would eventually remember it and let it show in a cute, understated and very private way.

Date: 2012-01-26 07:27 pm (UTC)Not to be all Grinch-y, but I kind of don't like birthday or holiday fic as a rule. It's like babyfic-- there's nothing wrong with it per se, but it just isn't my thing. IDEK. I am weird. :o

Date: 2012-01-26 07:42 pm (UTC)I'd like to think that Lee and Kara would both acknowledge each others birthdays in a small but meaningful way. I don't see big parties or anything like that. But maybe rustling up a favorite piece of fruit, or a piece of cake, and leaving it on the others bunk with a note.
