To the heart and soul of fandom!

Hi everyone, I'm Claudia and I'll be with you this week. If last week DPPs and the rewatch are any indication, it seems 2012 has started well in our little corner of the world. That makes me truly happy. :)

Fic is a fundamental part of fandom.  More than thinky discussions and vids and manips and all those  other lovely activities  and games we all enjoy so much,  it’s the stories  that keep the flame alive. They fix what canon did wrong, they spell out what canon only implied, they fill in the blanks canon left behind, they go where canon would never dare go,  they throw canon out the window and create whole new universes where our beloved characters can do pretty much  anything.

 Perhaps the buzz has dwindled, as I have sometimes heard people  regret. But what we may now lack in numbers we certainly make up for in talent and creativity. We, as a fandom,  are truly privileged to have so many amazingly talented storytellers  amongst us.  Some are not active anymore  but their creations still inspire and move us  (daphnaea , stars_like_dust,   just to name a couple).Like Starbuck, they won’t be forgotten. Some continue to keep our favorite characters and our ship alive with their unrelenting creativity  (sci_fi_shipper ,taragel, kag523 and so many others ). And let’s not forget the new voices out there. They have just arrived but have already left their mark (apodixis  and letterstonorah , for example).

 We often rec their stories time and time again. As we should, of course.  Each and every one of them has a unique voice and , at least for me , it is impossible to pick a favorite. That’s not what today is about. Today is about praising and being thankful. These amazing writers are the heart and soul of fandom. Without them we wouldn’t be here.

So, as we begin a new week in a still brand new year, what I propose today is that we take a moment to thank them for their past creations, to cheer them on their present endeavors and to help energize them for a new year of writing, creativity and pilot loving. How? Think of an unforgettable writer. Initiate a thread dedicated to said writer . Tell us why they are unforgettable and send them your love. (You don’t need to rec any of their stories, but if you feel the need to do so, nobody will complain. ;)

Rachel is unquestionably one of the best writers out there. I think it was kag523 that said once that Rachel could write a shopping list and still amaze us with her writing. That's absolutely true. She is that good with words. Not only writing fic, mind you. If you have never read her incredible character analysis, you don't know what you're missing.

Rachel, you are truly unforgettable. Thank you for being here and for being such a nice, thoughtful individual on top of everything. May the muse inspire continue to inspire you and may God (or the gods or whatever) continue to bless you.

(Oh, and it was her birthday a few days ago, so, once again : HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!! )

I read some of Rachel's analysis (ok, most of them) and I'm like - that's what I feel but I'm totally unable to express.

I'll start the KAG523 squee thread, because no one can get me to read an epic bazillion word AU Kara/Lee fic like she can. Her novels really do read like novels. I've found myself at the scifi section in the local bookstore thinking 'this looks good...but I could also read a KAG523 novel for free and it'd probably be better.'

Also she multiships but you'd never be able to tell from any particular story, because any pairing she's writing she writes like it's the only OTP in the world.

LOL. I KNOW. My regular books reading has suffered a lot because of that. I have this huge pile of new books sitting on my bookcase, but somehow I never get to them.

So very true. She is incredibly creative and I love how open-minded she is. I never thought I'd read a Kara/Leoben story, much less that I'd actually enjoy it. Yet, she has managed to make me do both. She could pair Kara and Lee with a rock and still convince me. She is THAT good.

Her total commitment to BSG fandom is incredible and unwavering, and she's always got new ideas on ways to share the love. She writes wonderful angsty fic and makes gorgeous icons and graphics as well, but more than that, Heather's been at the heart of really keeping this pilotshippers corner of fandom alive and so strong now at 3 years past the end of active canon. Whenever you need something, she's right there to lend an encouraging word or a sympathetic ear or to pitch right in and help out. This fandom would be such a sadder, poorer, less joyful place without her. She deserves a...

I've started beta-ing for Nora, and a lovely friendship has grown from that. We have a lot of interpersonal traits in common and it's great fun to snark with her. Her fic is intelligent, introspective, and surprisingly funny at times. I hope we get to see a lot more from her in the future!

She is such a central part of the K/L shipper nation. Only for keeping this comm alive would be enough to grant this position. Also, she has been around for a while but she just won't lose her enthusiasm. The sheer number of fics she wrote last year is proof of that. They are all so good and fun. She writes such amazing banter. I just love her dialogues.

I also love her fierce love and devotion for Kara Thrace. She is certainly Kara's best champion out there. And yet, she writes Lee so well. A truly inspiring lady.

Why?

Because she is the most dedicated, Kara / Lee shipper in the world. She is absolutely unwavering in her love of Pilots and it shows in both the comms she hosts and in her own writing. She's also a treasure trove of fic reccs and is willing to talk to newbies (even opinionated multi-shippings ones - as I was when I first showed up).

As fandom goes, I would say that a good deal of the continued participation is simply because Tara continues to promote it!

I'll start with Taragel because she was first author to whom I completely and utterly dedicated myself. I still have her list of fics as one of the default links on the homepage of (several of) my browser(s). I think I have read them all now, but as I made my way through the episodes, I avoided spoilers but still tried to read as much Tara!fic as possible. Her vids are moving and funny and her taste in shippy music just grabs my heartstrings.
Plus? Ice!Pilots is a thing of utter squeeful beauty...(The Cutting Edge is a big Shmoopy memory for me & my old man).

SOMEDAY I might have a gif to share but for now, I'll just say thank you, Tara, for all your hard work and dedication and for sharing your creativity with us so freely!

Pennyante definetely deserves a shout out as one of the outstanding new voices in fandom. She has amazing writing skills and is shaping up a truly fascinating story that has a really original premise and incredible character insights. Her Kara/Lee and Lee/Adama dialogue is so moving. A must read.

I have to do a general post of utter gratitude. I feel like lately I just haven't had enough hours in the day to comment everywhere I'd like to. I'm so long-winded and I like to be specific in my praise of fic or insightful in my thinky thoughts and so when pressed for time (or thumb-strength whilst posting from the phone) I make the sad decision to keep quiet. And for that I'm so sorry. Because you folk all have such a dedication to this ship and this fandom and when I decided to dive in and speak up it was almost entirely to support you all in what you do, to help drive the wheels of creativity that, frankly, don't need any help :D Y'all are brilliant and warm and friendly and so gifted. And so kind to each other! Yes there's snark, but it's never personal! You've even taught me to LET GO of so many of my personal squicks about fics so that I can enjoy the bigger picture and feel the love for the excellent story (like when I find typos or whatnot and once it would have made me stop but now I keep going because y'all just point out the goodness and taught me that if we're gonna be hypercritical, we're gonna lose authors or at least run out of time to post stuff!!)

Anyway, When I went looking for BSG fic, I found this post (http://bsgficfinders.livejournal.com/72502.html) and it was a good starting point. (in the interest of full disclosure, though, most of you know the first fic I sought was of the Kara/Bill variety but then I surrendered)

I think I started with Wisteria and Taragel and have been gorging myself randomly and with abandon every since. With a few exceptions, I can't remember who wrote what, and I comment on about 2/3 of all the fic I adored but sometimes I just want MORE and don't stop to comment.

Then I found all these communities alive on LJ and it's been so wonderful since then. I doubt I would have even finished We Used To Wait without so much enthusiasm from everyone else and now that it's finished, everyone here has convinced me not to stop.

Even though she's only written one fic so far (and yes, we're all still waiting for your Notebook crossover, lady, i haven't forgotten!), Aurora_0811 has a beautiful way with words when it comes to our pilots and her fic and comments both have so much heart. olvidarling! She has a Sam/ Sonja fic (WIP, I think) that kag523 promoted, and it's really good! I hadn't previously been into either character, much less the ship, but she does a great job.
