Lee finds her in the head, still in her flight suit, staring into the quiet. He doesn’t want to disturb her, doesn’t want to be the one interrupts. It feels like forever since he spoke to her, like he might not know her language anymore so he only whispers. “Kara.”

For a long time, she continues in silence. So long that Lee thinks he should leave her alone. Then she lifts her chin and replies. “I never think about dying with Sam. I’ve thought about him dead or dying. And I think about my death, but it’s never with him. It’s separate, like watching Zak’s accident. Like I’m hardly even there.

“But when I think about…” her words stop short, and suddenly Lee recognizes tears rolling down her face. He gulps back a breath and joins her on the bench. Near enough to touch without trouble, but without touching. Then her hand snakes out and grabs hold of his. The jolt of contact ripples through him, through them both as Kara begins to talk again. “But when I think about you, I die right along with you even if I’m still alive.”

“I don’t even imagine you dying,” Lee responds firmly and squeezes Kara’s hand until he’s afraid she’s going to yank it away for the pain. Instead she turns slightly to him, her face on the verge of breaking. She blinks rapidly and chews her lip.

“Then give me something to live for,” she sniffles, but she pulls her hand out of his with a force more like Kara and jumps to stand as though she can’t be near him.

Lee stays rooted to the bench, dumbstruck as Kara stalks away. She wipes her eyes and fidgets with the zippers and snaps to get out of her flight suit. Slowly Lee rises behind her, reaching out to touch the newly revealed bare skin of her arms only to stop short because the only thing he can imagine being worse than losing Kara now if losing her if she were truly his.

Beautiful! Poor pilots. It's interesting that they both feel that they will die without each other but won't let themselves be together because they are afraid of loosing each other. That sounds confusing just writing it. Geez pilots, get it together.:)

And confusing though it may be to write out, it was so obvious and simple when I was writing. ;) It's just so pilots.

Guh that ending! Oh kids. I love how Kara starts talking. It sounds very much like her to start by talking about Sam and then Zak and not Lee, even though he's the crux of it.

Beautiful that the Chief/Cally incident prompts this from her. Seeing this couple facing their death so together made her think of Lee. Shame they're both so utterly screwed up.

Beautiful and delicate and so much silence that I was holding my breath. I can't tell you how much I love their need to die with one another - that even though they aren't together they are ALWAYS together. Beautiful!

And I know he touches her anyway. He has to! :/

So sweet and sad. Very pilots. They really couldn't live happily together but they would never want to be apart forever, either. Nicely written!

One of my favorite dichotomies of pilots is that they don't think they can be together but they can't really be apart either. (At least in canon - I think they'd do fine if they'd just do it!)

I thought my heart was breaking while I was reading this, but then I got to this last line and it broke all over again. :(

But, as H. said above, I'm sure he reached out to her anyway. He could never say no to her.

Y'know, this is exactly Kara's reasoning for what she did in Unfinished Business. EXACTLY. (I don't even add the qualifier "in my head", because it feels like canon makes it so clear).

This is beautiful not despite but because of the sadness - I don't have all the words right now, but their initial tentativeness and then the way the barriers crumble (and then the pulling back) is just so utterly perfect and in line with canon for this period.

And I think this one wrenches at my heartstrings even more because their exchange here puts their friendship just as strongly in focus as their romantic love. There's something of the "Under the Wing" vibe here, and it is perfection even when it hurts.

Thank you so much for this. I have such a hard time giving into the sad, unresolved elements of Kara and Lee's relationship. The dance, the breaking down only to pull away again, is so enthralling but I always want to fix it instead of trusting the almost necessity hurt between them.
