DPP: Pilots And Pets

Alright, after the dose of angst that was yesterday's DPP, I think today can do with something a bit more lighthearted. Something like....


Yeah, that's Lee with Jake the dog. Which got me thinking, what would it have been like if Lee had kept Jake instead of giving him away to Romo? Or what if he'd given Jake to Kara? Pilots' quarters on a Battlestar are no place to keep a dog, but she could probably have done with having something around that showed her affection once in a while and wasn't a creepy little kid or a bunch of frakked-up adults. So could he, for that matter. And it's not as if they really had a lot of pet options, since the Cylons nuked all the animals along with the rest 99.9999% of humanity.

So I guess my point is, the idea of pilots having kids isn't something I'm really fond of, but for some reason I really like the idea of them having pets - either individually or together. In an AU where they could have pets, what could you see them with? Kara with a fat ginger cat who tries to sit on her head**? Lee with a hamster? Or maybe they'd adopt a golden retriever/other dog and throw lots of sticks for it to fetch (I'd like to see Kara with a dog)? Or maybe a pet flamingo (hey we saw them on Earth). Or maybe one of them would just about be ok with a goldfish? This is silly spec, but I'd love to have your thoughts! And spec on their possible childhood pets is encouraged, too. As is fic (always!)

To end this, here is a picture of pilots since I feel weird doing a post without one and there are no pictures of Kara with an animal of any kind.


** this happened to me once, only the cat wasn't ginger. I don't know if even Kara Thrace could intimidate a cat sufficiently to stop it pulling stunts like that, and in my head it would tyrannize Lee completely.

I feel like Kara would be such a dog person. A really big dog. Don't know why. I think maybe I read that in a fic somewhere and it stuck in my head...

Yep, I see her as a dog person, lots of stick-throwing and going running with it and generally having something around that will comfort her when she's doing badly.

She really doesn't strike me as a catlady, though she might put up with a big mangy alley cat if it hung around her door and refused to leave her alone, I can see her feeding it scraps out of sheer annoyance. Lee might be a better cat!person though.

Oh, and I know why I think Kara's a dog person, it's taragel's avatar of Katee with her pug - Katee dancing with her pug, no less. It makes me crack up every time I see it.

I can see them both liking dogs, but Kara not being much into cats. I also sadly feel like Kara has possibly always wanted a pet but never been able to have one. It's funny to say this, but judging from the way she liked to grumble at the raider in YCGHA, she would probably be really talkative with pets and be able to process a lot of anger by mildly taking it out on her dog, LOL.

Also, this post has made me want lycanthrope!fic, in which Kara is unaware that the stray dog she picked up is a shapeshifting hot dude. What have you done.

But yeah, I do think Kara would have wanted a pet - and I can just imagine her grumbling at it when something pisses her off, lol.
