The Perfect Unfinished Mix
Sep. 29th, 2011 11:51 amPut your gloves on, today's discussion is about Unfinished Business.

The most romantic BSG episode has two version and although, people vary as to which one they prefer, I think that it is safe to assume that we all wish that the final product was a combination of these two. Some things are simply better in UB, while others in UBEX. Today, we're going to mix up the best of both episodes in order to "create" the perfect 'Unfinished Business' cut.
Throughout the day, I will be posting caps (courtesy of Emma-Jane), videos (courtesy of pilotography) or descriptions of Kara/Lee scenes that differ between the aired and extended version. I'll try to go from ep start to finish and include all the important moments.
P.S. Yesterday's game was a great fun. Many thanks to everyone who contributed with some wonderful drabbles. The post will stay open until the end of the week so feel free to keep the fun going. Those poor kids are still keeping their clothes on and haven't even shared a proper kiss. I think it'd be cruel of us to leave them like that.

Atmosphere
Date: 2011-09-29 10:03 am (UTC)Did you like the raw atmosphere of UBEX or did you prefer the more poetic aired version with lots of images and little time for dialogue?
Originial version for me, bb!!!
Date: 2011-09-29 04:33 pm (UTC)And Lee with the all "I just realized I have a crush on you, omg!" Aww no, bb. Don't buy that for a minute. And there's just too much talking. Pilots don't talk. They do. If they actually talked about shit, they'd have worked out all their issues in about 5 minutes. But baby don't work that way. And I love them all the more for it. ((In fact, this really goes to one of the reasons I love them so much as a fictional couple-- they screw it up, they dance around each other, they're not perfect. They miss opposruntities, they don't get ever afters, they share moments. They can't have a lifetime but they are eternal. DICHOTOMY! CONTRADICTION! NATURALISM! HOW DO I LOVE THEE?))
**wanders back to the topic**
These sparseness of the original version and the negative space make it great. It's left open to intepretation on a variety of levels. It works as a tone poem, as pure cinema, and as a really lovely (if somewhat ambiguous) character study.
In a word? Perfection.

Date: 2011-09-29 12:41 pm (UTC)UBEX felt like a different story entirely--it was clear from their first kiss that she was inviting this, and the way she smiles against his shoulder after he comforts her was perfect.
Also, because I didn't see it posted in the list yet, the Starbuck-Tigh scene is one of my favorite things ever :)

Date: 2011-09-29 10:18 am (UTC)The Kara/Sam scene is quite a bit longer in UBEX compared to the aired version. For once, we get to see glimpses of the hot sexing with a hint that Kara is actually thinking about Lee (that girl really needs to do something about that habit). It is more obvious in UBEX than UB that Kara and Sam are living on two different ships, barely interact and that Kara's nowhere near ready to commit to a traditional marriage
Do you prefer the scene with or without the sexing?
Do you like the additional dialogue between Kara and Sam?
Re: Conjugal visit
Date: 2011-09-29 02:01 pm (UTC)That kinda sums up my feelings about this scene and the entire episode of UB and UBEX. it makes me sick to my stomach (either version) that she is with that worthless character (yes I am still bitter, yes I am full of vitriol for Anders, yes I still hate rdm's guts)in anyway, and then it gets worse as the ep progresses an we see what happened. It feels like I am having my skin flayed off watching Kara be so incredibly stupid and evil by utterly destroying any happiness with Lee after they had what made my heart soar that finally FINALLY they got there shit together and just let their love happen.
Did I go to far?

The Big Reveal
Date: 2011-09-29 01:44 pm (UTC)Do you think it's better to find out about their love-making in one go during the Adama-Chief fight (UBEX) or do you rather watch the short-cut scenes interjected into Kara and Lee's boxing match (UB)?
Re: The Big Reveal
Date: 2011-09-29 07:09 pm (UTC)Now, I haven't seen UBEX except for sampled scenes, so I'm not an expert. However, I know I love all the extra information I'm getting from those scenes that didn't air...but the pacing would feel off to me with all the uninterrupted scenes. I really fell in love with the going back and forth, and doling it out in little bits.
The Ultra Bitch
Date: 2011-09-29 02:07 pm (UTC)Dee: Why are you two even fighting? Why not just get a room?
Kara: Been there, done that. Guess it just rubbed us both the wrong way.
Kara: And once again, it's just you and me.
Lee: Motherfrakker!
Was it too much or did you enjoy how Kara got rid of Dee?
Fight
Date: 2011-09-29 02:17 pm (UTC)Fight in UB or UBEX?
Re: Fight
Date: 2011-09-29 02:31 pm (UTC)That is not to say that I agree with what Lee did in response because he was an asshat for making Dee think she even mattered more than a comfort to him.
The fight in both versions is devastating because even with the whole "sexual equality, this proves that they are equals" thing my old fashioned sensibilities make Kara and Lee, two people who truly love each other but won't move out of the way so that they can be together, so thoroughly hurt each other. Yeah I get that this is what they needed to heal, in their own messed up way, but still....

Kara: Ah, flying's gonna suck now anyway. Lots of training, endless CAPs. The war's over. So is all the good stuff.
Lee: No, don't say that. You'll jinx it.
Lee: So, where am I standing now? Is this the kitchen?
Kara: Mmm. Bedroom.
Lee: No, no, no, no. No, thank you. That is not someplace I want to go, or think about or imagine or anything else, okay?
Kara: That sounds like a personal problem to me.
Lee: Just give me a tour of your house, okay? Show me all the great rooms you and Pyramid Boy are gonna have, all the great views, all the cool furniture. Gimme a tour of the future life of Kara Anders.
Kara: I'm not getting married.
Kara. Is this how you wanna spent it? Who you wanna spend it with?
Kara: You got someone in mind, Lee?
Lee: Tell me you're not afraid that I'm gonna come along and upset your neat little applecart
Kara: Maybe I want it upset.
'Let them talk' or 'get down to the business ASAP'?
Fear

Liked the added line?
Re: Fear
Date: 2011-09-29 06:21 pm (UTC)So like all other parts of UBEX this spells out that he's daring her to say she loves him. Kara can't turn down a dare. He's using that against her to get what he wants. I mean it almost worked for her on the table in Daybreak (stupid glass) so he figures it's worth a try.

Lee: Yeah, you're what I want. I just don't... I don't think I really knew it until I said it out loud just now.
Kara: Why? Because of Zak?
Lee: Yeah, and a lot of things. Mostly because I was afraid to admit how much I needed you. How much I needed anyone.
Kara: Yeah.
Lee: I love you, Kara Thrace.
Kara: I love you, too.
Insecure Kara or confused Kara?
Re: I love you
Date: 2011-09-29 05:43 pm (UTC)I cringed at it the first time too but once I thought about it for a little bit I started loving it. I think it really took him that long to realize that he truly and definitely wanted Kara. And yes, he knew that he felt something extraordinary for her but he didn't know whether he could call it love, because it was just so different to what he ever felt for anybody else. He's been in love with other women and it was easy, happy, uncomplicated and never mixed with guilt, shame, fear and hurt.
He's scared of the intensity of his feelings for Kara and the way she can get under his skin and like her he believes that given their history they would just be much better if they could only be friends and could get rid off the constant sexual tension and longing. Kara is the only thing that Lee could never have and part of him doesn't want to have so he feels week and pathetic for not being able to get over her. He spendt years fighting his lust and desire for her only finally realizing that the best and easiest thing is just to accept it and give in.
Uncle Saul
Date: 2011-09-29 03:03 pm (UTC)Kara supposedly freaking out in the morning and running to marry Sam (UB) or Kara contemplating both choices and making a conscious decision?
Re: Uncle Saul
Date: 2011-09-29 03:17 pm (UTC)Although, it does give context to Kara's choice, which is what the extended version of UB did mostly for me. UB was light on Kara's motivations and the UBEX filled in those gaps so we could see the truth of her vulnerability. And besides all the heartbreak and woe in this episode that BROKE MY POOR SHIPPER HEART, I did love finally getting to see that hidden fear and softness that Kara is usually so wonderful at concealing.
Without the extended version of UB I don't know that I would ever be able to honestly say that I 'get' why she did what she did other than boiling it down to 'Kara was just being a bitch' which wasn't really it at all.
