DPP: Meta-ing the Meta
Jun. 16th, 2011 03:19 pm Happy Thursday, everyone! :)
Today I thought it would be cool to share some love for no_takebacks...this is such an amazing fandom community! I would love to hear your favorite thing about no_takebacks, what you enjoy (or what drives you nuts) about it, why it enriches your life, funny stories from your time here, or any other comm-love you'd like to share!

Date: 2011-06-16 09:40 pm (UTC)This is not my first crazy internet fandom. My RL friends know this, but still I get the eyerolls when I try to share a funny-thing-happened-at-the-comm story. And then one day, after I had long ago given up trying to explain things, a friend who volunteers with a house rabbit rescue organization realized she's met people on the internet, then met up with them at conventions. ORLY?! The scifi/TV show bit still makes me seem somehow MORE kookie, sure, but now at least she gets finding people with similar interests and talking about stuff your other RL friends could give a flying frak about.
I've made a number of friends here. I've met a couple of folks in RL (
We talk meta here- deconstruct characters and choices and scenes. We write poetry and comment!fic and epics. We post teh pretty. We get silly. We try to fix what The Powers That Be broke. We commiserate over the things about BSG and Kara and Lee that mean something to each of us. The conversations aren't always serious, but they're always respectful. Sometimes I read things that are so well-thought-out and reasoned that I cannot deny their blistering truth. And sometimes I'm moved by what someone has shared.
Sure, it was just a show. And sure, we're all faceless avatars who could really be anyone. But we share a common passion, and it's been nice to know that every day (or very nearly), I'll have something to read related to Starbuck and Apollo and their never-ending love of epic angst.

Date: 2011-06-16 11:19 pm (UTC)This is the first comm I've ever been a part of where everyone has been so consistently welcoming and engaged in conversation and open to new people even though you all know each other so well already. I love this comm because I felt immediately welcomed here, and because you don't have to "earn" cool points or attention or anything, you just show up and flail about pilots and people respond with flailing of their own, and then it's just a huge flail party.
And lords know I love a flail party.
Other things I love, crazy awesome amounts of pretty pilots stuff, pictures and gifs and nutty cracky manips that are both creepy and hilarious, tonnes of new fic to read with all the comment!fic and recs, there's always something I haven't read yet, which for a fandom where the show has been finished for this long, is totally amazing.
In short, I LOVE NO TAKEBACKS, AND I DON'T CARE WHO FRAKKING KNOWS! (someone had to do it right? right?)
Man this was mushy!
P.S. Dannica, where is this picture from? I always want to know and forget to ask when people post it.

Date: 2011-06-18 03:23 am (UTC)There are actually a couple great shots like that which were taken during rehearsal/filming, where you can see the two of them doing a scene, but then once the actual episode airs you can see that the director went with a different take and so there is no screencap that matches what you see in the picture. Here are a few of my favorites, one from Colonial Day, one from Maelstrom, and one from what looks like Scar, maybe? None of these moments/images appear in the actual episodes, but they are adorable.

Date: 2011-06-18 09:54 am (UTC)I really want to hear whatever conversation they're having in the Colonial Day picture, it's just so perfectly them in that moment. *sigh*

Date: 2011-06-18 08:25 pm (UTC)I know a million people have said this, but I absolutely LOVE how the concept of personal space just doesn't seem to exist for them - they're always in each others faces.
Oh, and that Colonial Day pic makes me want to cry a little bit, considering how everything went to hell afterwards.

Date: 2011-06-17 06:45 pm (UTC)This is despite the fact that they* frequently make me want to weep, and it's been two years since Daybreak (which I watched early last month because it took me TWO YEARS to get over the fact that there was no more BSG and no more Pilots, and this was the last I'd have of them).
In short: Pilots have RUINED me for any other TV pairing, I probably feel the same way about the ship that they do about each other, and despite making my peace with Daybreak, Part 2 it's only here that I feel like I'm among my own, i.e. people who get it.
*pilots, not comm members!

Date: 2011-06-18 02:03 am (UTC)i'm relatively new to bsg and was a bit intimidated to join communities and get involved in fandom as i started ficcing, but i immediately felt at home here. there are other communities that i'm active in, but very few exist with this sense of close-knit coziness. i love the dpp because it's like a little bit of joy in my life every day - i don't always have time to respond but some days it is the complete highlight of my day. seeing new pilots love every day just reminds me of how much i love the ship and the show, and everyone here has been really warm and welcoming, so i can't thank y'all enough for that and for creating this space.
