DPP: Sooner or Later?

This might be my favorite cap of all the screencaps.


Let us pretend today that we are taking on the roles of the Moirae, the Three Fates. Clotho, Atropos and Lachesis held the threads of human lives in their power. They could decide when certain events could happen in people's lives, even when they would come into being or cease to exist.

So let us imagine and examine... If you could wield this power, what events in BSG canon, and especially the lives of pilots, would you choose to move sooner or later? And how would it change things?

Would they kiss for the first time after Kara safely returned from that moon? Or even earlier, in the mini, when Kara was wrong about Lee being dead? Or would they not kiss until some far future point? Maybe after Lee's little Spacewalk.

Would Zak never wake as they had sex on the table (has anyone ever written that? hmm)? Would they do the deed on Colonial Day? Or would they never know each other in that way?

Personally, I kind of like the way it goes down in canon for the most part (at least till UB events maybe) but I would have loved them to have some of the maturity and support and growth that they exhibit in S4.0 and 4.5 a lot sooner.

YOU HAVE THE POWER. HOW WOULD YOU ALTER THEIR TIMELINE?

This is the most simplistic of answers, but I really think the thing I'd change was Kara's death. I'd simply move it down to match up with Lee's. I truly honestly think that, given that, she and Lee could have eventually figured things out on their own. Problem was, by the time they had the chance to do it, there was no time left.

I think I like their relationship in canon as it is, but I agree with you, I would have let them have a functional grown-up relationship way sooner.

I do think you have a point. Even if they hadn't died, the RELATIONSHIPS seemed like they clearly were supposed to die much earlier. Sam's goodbye in Collaborators... should have probably been it for them. And Dee could've left him anytime between UB and Taking a Break. I'm still curious as to what made the writers keep stringing those along. Was it really all just bitterness/perverseness on Ron's part because he didn't want to give Starbuck/Apollo a real relationship? Seems so petty and....shortsighted.

What if Kara and Lee kissed when Lee agreed to help Kara assassinate Cain? That hug they shared could have easily morphed into passion because they thought they were going on a suicide mission to kill Cain in her own CIC.

If they did kiss, then Lee's decision to die in his ripped flightsuit is a different one: he's resigned to meeting Kara on the other side as he assumes it's their last day alive rather than he's depressed about Bill & Laura's decision-making.

Great question! I am always someone who tends to accept canon for what it is, but also love AU if that makes sense. So I don't know if I would change their timeline so much as I would change the way that they deal with their feelings at various points.

That said, I think it could have been really interesting to have some real strong K/L stuff happening when Kara went back to rescue Sam. That way maybe Kara would have been able to compare her feelings for Lee (deep, true) with her feelings for Sam (real, but far less deep and far more rooted in a sense of feeling a need to rescue him).

Does any of this make sense? I am rocking a sake bomb hangover and it's all sounding strange when I read it back lol...

I like the point about us getting to see Kara compare her relationships with Lee & Sam. (ha, just realized that she only dates men who have 3 letter first names, Zak). Because, if the writers wanted to give her and Lee these romantic relationships with other people that we as an audience were supposed to take semi seriously (ie Sam & Dee), then couldn't they have given them sort sort of build up? Like Kara and Sam played Pyramid & frakked so then she's in love with him and marries him. Ummmm ok? Lee taught Dee hand to hand combat techniques and suddenly her relationship with Billy is done and now her and Lee are fully on? Ummmm sure why not?

But Lee & Kara have been developing since day one and have had countless sweet little moments and serious talks and a camaraderie and family connection and instant insane chemistry so of course that could NEVER happen. Oh, here endeth rant.

All I'm saying is, either they should have made the Lee/Dee Kara/Sam relationships develop if we were supposed to invest in them or just skip them altogether as the thinly veiled and contrived plot devices that they were.

I feel like any point before Kobol's Last Gleaming would have worked out--if she just hadn't started sleeping with randos, and him with prostitutes and Dee, they probably could have worked things out. My favorite should-have-been moment is the end of Hand of God, but the mini series could have been great too; I can totally see Kara, knowing he's dead, finally giving up the denial about loving Lee. And then he returns... ;)

I know this is not a change of timeline, but I would have *died* to see them have a heart-to-heart, serious talk about their feelings for each other --maybe in S4, after she came back from the Demetrius. I know they never talked about "them", but after so many years of angst and denial… Well, I guess it was about time!

I think it's not really WHEN that matters but more likely HOW? What I mean by that is that you have two people who constantly face death, ALL THE TIME, and I think that at some point with all the drinking that's going on, there would have been enough alcohol to have a REAL conversation. Their inhibitions would have been lowered enough for them both to admit the truth about their feelings for each other. Even "in denial" Kara and "repressed" Lee would have eventually said something to trigger this conversation.

Really, we have ALL been there...too much alcohol and stuff comes put of your mouth that was meant to be locked up.

I have many complaints about canon, most of which occur starting at Maelstrom, but if I accept that episode and beyond *chokes it down* then I'd have to say Lee leaving Galactica after Kara came back from the dead is the stupidest contrivance ever. Just no. And while I'm here, Frak You, RDM. :(

Yeah it's funny how Roslin was able to run the government while living on Galactica, but not Lee.

Honestly I had a problem with Lee becoming a politician in season four. I know he never wanted to be in the military as long as he was, and always wanted to explore other options. Also the writers were having a hard time figuring out what to do with him.

It's not that I don't think Lee would make a good politician he would. It's just didn't make sense in their situation to allow one of their best officers to leave. He's far too valuable.

I thought in season four he would go back to the military and stay close to Kara. Eventually they would get together.

Cloud Nine Shooting

I'd choose to move the cloud nine shooting to after Kara returns from Caprica with Sam and the resistance fighters, but before they decide to go to New Caprica. Once Anders is back and safe on Galactica, Kara won't feel guilt or pressure to go save him, and can focus all her guilt on the fact that she shot Lee. Oh, and kick Dee out of sick bay.
