If it gives you joy
May. 23rd, 2011 04:03 pmHi, everyone. I'm Rachel, very pleased to be driving the DPP bus this week :) I want to say a huge thanks to
IF IT GIVES YOU JOY, YOU DON'T HAVE TO EXPLAIN IT Day!
Tell us about the things that are making you happy. It can be fic, vids, episodes, authors, old favorites, new discoveries, Kara/Lee, BSG more widely, or real life. An appreciation thread -- Let's celebrate all the great people and great creations going on out there!
Some things that give me joy:
In this fandom:
* Muppetstar Galactica Gives Me Joy. Funny. Every. Time.
*
*
*
*
* Lee's inability to dance gives me joy.
* The way Kara says "They're good stars" to Hera when she gives her a drawing of colored dots gives me joy.
* Tyrol's little head bob after the "smack you in the mouth" exchange in 33 gives me joy.
* The hug in Captain's Hand. *tear of joy*
* Jamie's mispronunciations of the word "been."
* Any and all Academy-era fic.
Random other joyful things:
* I'm finally catching up on the current season of Doctor Who. So fun.
* The second series of Sherlock is currently filming. Squee!
* Benedict Cumberbatch reading Keat's "Ode to a Nightingale." *puddle of goo*
* Tom Hardy plays an interesting Heathcliff in the most recent BBC "Wuthering Heights."
* Romala Garai in the 2008 "Emma" miniseries reminds me delightfully of Katee Sackhoff.
* I finally saw Inception. I love the in media res style of storytelling, and Arthur wins at life.
* The 25th anniversary concert of Les Miserables was beautiful. No one will ever top Philip Quast's Javert, but Alfie Boe's Valjean was heavenly.
* I am about to watch Carlos Saura's flemenco dance film of "Carmen," which I haven't seen in years. I love this whole movie - I love anything that goes behind the scenes of rehearsal for theatre (The Dresser is another great one), and the tabaccaria dance/murder sequence in this is just electrifying. Yay!
Whew. Lots of happiness.

Date: 2011-05-23 09:33 pm (UTC)Kara/Lee: The Musical (http://rachelindeed.livejournal.com/6624.html) is maybe my favorite fandom thing ever created. So brilliant <3 <3 <3
I have so many other favorites too but am running out the door. Right now I'm really thrilled that there's been lively discussion at both KTL and LAD, am excited to read the lee stories coming up for the Ficathon at LAD, and can't wait to turn my attention to Pilots Presents: THE SUMMER SEXQUINOX!!!
(And a big apology to you and everyone that this post went up so late today--I forgot that I was mucking around with settings last week so it was languishing in the moderation queue for a bit!)

Date: 2011-05-23 09:45 pm (UTC)Let's see, within the fandom this comm and the lovely
As for everything else:
*Parks & Rec is amazing and I started reading some Ben/Leslie fics this past weekend and I don't know why I thought I wouldn't like P&R fics because I OBVIOUSLY LOVE THEM!
*Reading the 2nd Game of Thrones novel and watching the series -- AMAZING.
*Writing about books and pop culture again makes me INFINITELY happy.
*Oldies by very goodies: family, husband, dog and friends.
*I came up with an idea for a screenplay that I LOVE. Now I just need to write it...

Date: 2011-05-23 10:10 pm (UTC)Things that make me happy:
1.
2. My fabulous FList makes me happy with all their love & support. I'm one lucky girl
3. Having time to actually read & write makes me happy.
4. Finishing up S4.5 re-watch so we can start all over with the mini and the days of hope for the pilots next week makes me SUPER happy!
5. Having so many awesome new fans on this comm makes me happy
6. Being able to finally realize my dream of going back to school makes me EXTRA happy.
Benedict Cumberbatch reading Keat's "Ode to a Nightingale." *puddle of goo* OMG! I JUST told KAG about my love for this poem! It's my favorite Keats poem and that reading is SO amazing. *melts*
Tom Hardy plays an interesting Heathcliff in the most recent BBC "Wuthering Heights." YES! I always thought Ralph Fiennes gave us the definitive version (but I had some serious issues with Juliette Binoche as Kathy) but I have to admit … Tom Hardy has the dark & brooding DOWN.
Speaking of hot men in hot roles, have you seen Michael Fassbender in Jane Eyre? *swoons*

Date: 2011-05-23 10:32 pm (UTC)I am DEFINITELY coming back to add a bunch of things, but I need a bit of time because:
a) I'm actually fighting my way through APA formatting right now.
Who in their right mind decided that ONE SPACE WOULD BE STANDARD??? My fingers cannot type that way!b) I actually need to compile a LIST OF EPIC!
c) I can't remember how to post links *rolls eyes* I know, I know... it should be easy, but I ALWAYS forget.
But before I go, here are a couple OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD:
♥ I love everyone in fandom who embraced me when I blew in the doorway, shouting: "Here I am, bitches!"
♥ I love that the BSG fandom - both Lee/Kara AWESOMENESS and everything ELSE that abounds - is still alive and well. It actually is overwhelming to me how much enthusiasm still thrives here.
♥ I love that the writing community here is alive and well. There is SUCH support and positivity! There are amazing authors, and I've learned SO MUCH from you all! *shakes head* You ROCK!
♥ I LOVE THE GRATUITOUS USE OF ALL CAPS AND EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!!!!!!!
♥ I love that LJ corrects me every time I write "colour" or "flavour" OR "LJ". Hee hee!
♥ I love YOU
♥ I will come up for more, but I have to give a shout out to
♥ And now I will leave a gif that showed up on tumblr about a week ago, and which I've been using ENDLESSLY. This happy dance makes me happy... in fact, I'm doing it RIGHT NOW!

Date: 2011-05-23 10:43 pm (UTC)I just finished it and I love it, but I can't keep it because it's made of yarn left from a very obvious sweater that I made for myself two winters ago.

Date: 2011-05-23 10:44 pm (UTC)Have you seen Toby Stephens in Jane Eyre?! And ok, I haven't seen Michael Fassbender play him yet, though I fully intend to and do think that he is epicly good casting for it and I'm looking forward to it, in my heart, Toby Stephens just IS Rochester, and Ruth Wilson IS Jane and that adaptation is perfect and beautiful and heartbreaking (even if they do take a few physical liberties of which I'm sure Charlotte Bronte would not approve - although secretly she'd be like YES, because that's the kind of girl she was).
Allow me to demonstrate my point.
The brow! The smile! The Voice!!! *sigh* THIS makes me happy :D

Date: 2011-05-23 10:44 pm (UTC)Completely O/T:
* The 25th anniversary concert of Les Miserables was beautiful. No one will ever top Philip Quast's Javert, but Alfie Boe's Valjean was heavenly.
Aaaaah, another Philip-Quast-as-Javert fangirl *squees*. He is my #1 definitive Javert (though the guy who was in the 25th Anniversary Tour, Earl Carpenter, was second best - seen him as Javert a few times). Also The Four Val Jeans sing Bring Him Home? Amazing. At least as amazing as when Michael Ball sang "my place is here I fight with you" in the ODM encore (which sent shivers down my spine).
ETA:
Also bringing me joy recently is screencapping for icon-making purposes for
ETA*2: In general life:
* books and music bring me much joy and comfort
* as does spending lazy afternoons at the seaside with one of my friends and her two very small children
* cycling on a flat surface (like a seafront) and a nice day brings me joy
* History. Can not stress enough how much I love History.
* The city I live in brings much joy, though sometimes, when I have errands to run, the tourists that come with living somewhere a)historical and b)close to the major ports with mainland europe don't bring me joy.
* My gerbils

Date: 2011-05-23 10:57 pm (UTC)They've taken a ton of liberties with the story, but it's still really good. I liked it a lot.
I love that I'm finding all these period piece fans here. One more thing that makes me really happy :-)
THIS POST IS MADE OF AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Date: 2011-05-23 11:16 pm (UTC)JOY! Things that give me joy! I'm feeling a lot of joy today!!
Here we go...
BSG related
1. This fandom gives me serious joy. It's so alive and busy and welcoming and open and warm, and it's like a big daily hug-in-a-mug to be a part of it. So, I could single people out and say how awesome they are, but then I feel like I'm NOT singling out other people and that makes me feel bad, so basically, EVERYONE HERE IS AWESOME! TAKE THAT!
2. Pilots hugs! They always ALWAYS give me joy, because they look like they're REALLY GOOD HUGS, from people who really give a damn about each other and I WANT ONE.
3. Tahmoh!!
4. The seriously awesome amount of well written fic that exists out there, even just comment!fic on the DPPs is of an insanely good standard and it makes me super happy.
5. BEAR MCCREARY! I cannot begin to put into words the amount of love I have for Bear McCreary and his talent and his brain and his beautiful BEAUTIFUL piano melodies.
6. I'm seconding Rachel's Academy-Era fic thing, and adding to it ANYTHING pre-mini, and kids AUs because I cannot get enough of reading about them as kids/teenagers/young adults/people who don't have to deal with death and destruction all day every day.
7. Ok, I am gonna single out
8. Pilots gifs of which I don't have enough. *ahem* HINT HINT HINT
9. The fact that BSG (pilots in particular) gives me all these insane ideas for cracky AU's which is normally not my kind of thing at all, but that I am currently really digging, such as the previously discussed Young Capricans, and more recently LOVE AND PYRAMID, and all kinds of others as well. I SEE PILOTS EVERYWHERE! It's becoming a problem. Except not because I really enjoy it.
non-BSG related
1. Poems! I am in full on poetry mode at the moment, probably because I have no job and nothing else to do, but I am just loving to sit and pour over my old poetry books from school and read things aloud and generally have awesome poetry times :D Poems are cool.
2. EXCLAMATION MARKS!!!!!!!!!!! And Caps-Lock
3. Joss Whedon's brain.
4. This new documentary about writers and EPs that looks cool and interesting
5. Hank and John Green and project for awesome and the sense that there are genuinely smart people out there who want to try and make the world better by doing nice things for other people.
6. SMART PEOPLE! I don't know how big he is outside of the UK, or indeed, how many of my fellow pilots shippers hail from dear old blighty, but Professor Brian Cox is THE BOMB. Because he is smart and interesting and funny and really loves learning things and helping other people learn things and never answers a question in a way that makes you feel stupid for not having known the answer and never makes up science things to make the truth more understandable to the common man AND used to play the keyboard for D:Ream.
7. the LIBRARY, where knowledge is free!
So that's a lot of joy I think. JOY JOY JOY JOY JOY JOY JOY!!!!!
...I had three mochas during the two and a half hours that I was at work today, I fear that it has done me no good.
I'm all SUGAR SUGAR SUGAR CAFFEINE JOY!!!!!!!

Date: 2011-05-23 11:25 pm (UTC)PERIOD DRAMAS! Yes! Gods yes. I am a fan. OH have you seen Persuasion from a couple of years back? Heart-achingly hot. Rupert Penry Jones should always be on my television. FACT.
Re: THIS POST IS MADE OF AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Date: 2011-05-23 11:29 pm (UTC)Smart people in general I love (though I know some and feel reeeeeally stupid when talking to them - all the time I'm saying words my internal monologue is telling me how much of a moron I sound) and Professor Brian Cox in particular ♥
Re: THIS POST IS MADE OF AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Date: 2011-05-23 11:33 pm (UTC)Professor Brian Cox is just so cool. I heard someone the other day refer to him as "the thinking woman's biscuit" and I was like, yeah, you know what? Yeah.

Date: 2011-05-23 11:38 pm (UTC)Also, fellow shipper person - should I read Game of Thrones before watching the series, or vice-versa?
no subject
Date: 2011-05-23 11:40 pm (UTC)Yes, I have seen (and own) the latest Persuasion. I liked everything about it except the very very end when she runs in the street like she does. Also? Speaking of Ciaran … he was the best Wentworth EVER. Persuasion happens to be my all time favorite Jane Austen book btw.
Okay, this settles it. We need to be friends! May I add you? :-)

Date: 2011-05-24 12:03 am (UTC)I am SORRY about all the caps but I am very exciteable today and very rarely talk to people who love Persuasion or even think it holds any merit, and the two of those things together leads to much flailing! A Fangirl does not recover from such a passion!
Also, I totally agree about the ending, with the running and the way that you can only hear music and her breathing which is strange and then the KISS THAT WILL NOT BE A KISS OH MY GOD HOW LONG CAN YOU TAKE TO ACTUALLY JUST PUT YOUR LIPS ON ANOTHER PERSON's LIPS??? But I think the very end scene at Kellidge with the dancing on the lawn is uber sweet.

Date: 2011-05-24 12:04 am (UTC)1. PILOTS
2. That this fandom is so, so welcoming and friendly, and still so active even now that I've found it so late.
3. Teeny tiny towels, and the muscles they don't cover.
4. Academy-era fic
5. Bunk/stealth-snuggle fic
6. Semi-meta fic, like the Stupid Thing Last Night series (http://stars-like-dust.livejournal.com/230809.html#cutid1), or the fic where fangirls flail over teeny tiny towels (http://widget285.livejournal.com/289049.html), or write pilots fanfiction (http://widget285.livejournal.com/311007.html).
7. Sweaty, triumphant Lee in Hand of God, eye-frakking Kara. (Every. Time.)
8. Hot pilot out-making gifs.
9. dualbunny's vids. And all other Pink/Kara vids.
10. Lee's woobie!face, aka "the pretty puppy" face. The one he makes when he's trying to figure out what's going on between Starbuck and Baltar at the Poker Table of Awkward.
Other Joyful Things!
1. It's finally starting to act like spring in my neck of the woods.
2. Parks & Recreation, and Parks & Recreation fic. <3
3. Kitties!
And I'mma done.

See, this is life-affirming and it rocks. Excuse me while I go hug my husband.
PS - Your gif-tastic reaction posts to BSG on your journal give me SO MUCH JOY. SO MUCH. The last one I can see ends at Maelstrom -- did you ever get around to doing another one for season 4? Because I would love to see it sometime!!

Date: 2011-05-24 12:37 am (UTC)I may have misspoken about BBC - now that I check the DVD listing it says Masterpiece Theatre. It aired on PBS in 2009, and they had a copy at our local library. I really think you'd like it :)

Date: 2011-05-24 12:42 am (UTC)Hmmmmmm, I really liked the book but I wouldn't say it's absolutely necessary to read it first. Although I think it helps a lot with understand who all of the characters are. My husband hasn't read the book and he always has questions about who is who.
(Game of Thrones icon of my fave character to whet your appetite.)
