"Do think anyone actually noticed?"

Kara finished lacing up her boot, but didn't turn around. Lee was asking questions again, and she didn't understand why the guy couldn't just relax.

"Yes, Lee. I think everyone noticed. I think that Dee patched in our comm feed to the entire fleet and heard exactly what dirty, nasty things we want to do with each other," Kara replied dryly. "Hell, Roslin stopped me after the committee meeting and asked for a few pointers."

She paused, waiting for him to come back with some sort of remark about just how inappropriate it had been for her to talk that way while working the security deal during the Quorum meeting. She smiled as she remembered how she'd been able to see his blush from across the room.

"Hmm," he replied. "That would explain why she suddenly wants me to come over for a late night briefing."

Kara knows. The flame and fire wake her every year, and vipers on the hangar deck call her down to watch their quiet steady clank and grind. The first anniversary after the Fall, she’s surprised, but she slips from her bunk and limps down to the vipers before the morning briefing. She tilts her head and recalls how flying saved her. A small smile creep over her mouth because of the brace and throb attached to her knee and despite the day she’s commemorating.

On the third anniversary since the fleets been on the run, the fifth since the day, Kara spends her time watching the vipers feeling a new, strange connection with the past. Not just the Colonies but new lost friend and marriages that were supposed to change everything. For the first time, Kara’s ritual is lacking. At first it’s just a funny little felling, but then a panic rises from her chest and sticks hard in her throat. She falls against the gray wall of corridor trying to choke through the first tears she’s shed since… since…

She’s about to slid down to the floor and let go when Kara feels a grip on her upper arm, wrapping firmly around the tattooed wing emblazoned there. Another reminded. Her head snaps to see who’s there almost like she’s ready to fight. There’s no will behind the impulse. Instead, she rests her eyes on the red ringed blue eyes of the man who caught her then too. The lump in her throat quivers, sending gasps and squeaks from her mouth.

“I don’t know, Lee. I thought…”

“I miss him too.”

Lee leads her back to their quarters, hardly getting the hatch shut before he’s pulled Kara tight in his arms. Tears are streaming and kisses falling. They collapse into bed together, finding and seeking comfort the same that night too. This time, five years later, they stay naked. They inhale and relish each other. Peace replaces guilt. Acceptance comes in for denial. Sharing memories play instead of disconcerting silence. Finally, they sleep tangled in grief and love.
