Fanon tends to portray Lee as a man unlikely to get a tattoo. I think this is very interesting considering that he's never said anything against tattoos - I don't even think he mentions Kara's marriage tattoos at all in canon. There is no evidence, either, that he is without a tattoo in a delicious secret place (although we've been lucky enough to see almost every inch of him).  Maybe Kara can solve the mystery??

Photobucket

Questions for shippers:
1. What types of events would inspire Lee to get a tattoo? What tattoo design might he get? How would Kara react?
3. If Lee and Kara were married in UB, would they get marriage tattoos? Would they be different than those in canon?
5. If Kara got another tattoo related to Lee, what would inspire it? What would be the design? How would Lee react?

Creative Ideas for shippers:
Anyone care to manip a tattoo onto our lovely boy?
Anyone skilled enough to draw the marriage tattoos for our happy couple?
Anyone feel inspired to write a Kara/Lee tattoo-related fic?

Fics?
There are quite a few K/L fics that feature tattoos and I'd love to get links! Give me my tattoo fix, shippers!! (And don't be shy about reccing your own - I know there are some tattoo-related fics hiding out in people's journals or buried in the many pages of the [livejournal.com profile] bsg_pornbattle.)

ETA: Don't forget to read (and continue!!) [livejournal.com profile] rachelindeed's fic for the videotaped memories post yesterday. Who will continue the story??

Random thingy of things: I really like the whole flow of Kara's wedding tattoo - We can admit it's a pretty tat, right? - and a while back I was trying to think of how the design could somehow be related to Lee if such a thing could be implemented into an AU, and came up with this idea that the circle part could have flaming edges to look more like a sun. (In fact, I had an eventually scrapped idea when writing "We're Not Friends" to have her get a tattoo on New Caprica of just that, because she was "going through a fascination with the Icarus myth," and if you know the Icarus story you know what's obnoxiously symbolic about that idea.)

I would love to read a fic in which a drunk Kara, Lee and Zak all get matching tattoos of some kind. And Lee is horrified the next day.

Lee fights the idea of the tattoo the second Kara mentions it.

“Frakking barbaric,” he announces. “Obscene.”

She raises an eyebrow.

“Sam and I had them.”

He grimaces, sitting up in the bed, abruptly annoyed with her. He might have Kara with him now, but everything to do with that portion of her life frustrates him. With fingers than are tighter than they need to be, he picks up her arm, twisting it so that the large design lays visible on the sheet.

“I’m reminded of that every day,” he snaps.

There are a few seconds when she doesn’t speak, just stares at him with angry eyes. He wonders briefly if she’s going to throw a punch – she has before – but she surprises him by wrenching away from him and standing naked from the bed.

“He only did it because I asked him to,” she hisses, glaring at him darkly.

“Well he tolerated a lot of things that I wouldn’t.”

The words are out before he intends; the silence that follows them, full of things that cannot be unsaid. Kara pulls on her clothes by the light of the camp lantern, lacing up her boots with angry jerks.

You were the one who wanted to make it official,” she accuses, voice cold.

And then she walks out into the night. Not looking back.

-----section break-----

She doesn’t return to their camp by the river for two weeks.

Lee fights the urge to follow her (though he does visit the nearby settlement the following morning, and overhears that she’s staying with the Agathons). She needs her space, and it’s not the first time they’ve fought hard enough that she’s run.

The first time was over the flight of the ships into the sun... (He and Romo won that argument, but at a cost.) The second was over keeping the Fleet’s supplies and technology... (Kara took that day.) Most recently the fights have been over the idea of children... (An impasse.)

This is yet another.

When she finally wanders back to their camp, late one evening, Lee lets it go. He offers her supper, which she takes without a word, then heads inside to bed. Falling asleep on the cot fully clothed.

It’s only in the morning, he sees the bandages.

The other tattoo is now gone; her skin raw and bleeding. Seeing it, he pulls her into a tight hug — his heart pounding fiercely — unable to explain why his throat aches to see the scars of her last marriage burned away.

There’s no mention of it for another two years.

-----section break-----

By then the colonists are starting to thrive. Roads cobbled. Temples built. The swaying green fields of grass by the river replaced by the golden sheen of wheat. Life is taking a foothold in this new world; babies being born.

Kara and Lee remain the same.

The two of them have traveled across the continent and the seas that surround it. Stood on the summits of the mountains they wanted to see. Sailed with speeds more terrifying than viper flight ever was. Survived storms and famine and winters that dragged on forever. Lost friends and gained them. Learned to live together with more calm than clashing... something neither of them expected at the beginning.

“When?” Lee asks her early one morning.

The stove – jerry-rigged from the remains of a raptor’s engine – is pumping meagre heat through the room, but neither of them has the urge to leave their cocoon of warmth. Kara is still half-asleep in their bed, her hair, now halfway to her waist, spread like a halo across the worn pillow, covers tucked up to her nose.

“When what, Lee? I’m tired...” she grumbles irritably, curling into his side, pressing her body close against him.

He picks up her arm, pulling it from the shroud of sheets and begins to trace the pale scars that mar it. The design is still there, barely discernable on the grain of her skin; as much a part of Kara as the crescent ‘c’ nestled against the inner curve of her hip. The silvery lines a faded emblem of yet another ghost that lives here in the cabin with them... like Zak or Sam or the loss of the Twelve Worlds. Comforting now, in its familiarity.

The threat of all of them long since faded to dust.

“When can we design our symbol?” he asks quietly.

She open her eyes.

Kara spends the next weeks sketching in her notebook. She sits on the stoop of their house in the thin warmth of the Spring sun, pencil in hand, working and reworking the design, her eyebrows pulled together in concentration. Lee waits nervously. When she finally shows it to him, he finds himself smiling; the poignant pull of times past linking with the present. It’s different enough from the emblem of her first marriage that he can accept it without question. Unique enough that it stands on its own.

The image somehow fitting for them both.

The process is unpleasant, and Kara teases him for his squeamishness. Lee grits his teeth and lets the steady throb become his only focus, the repetitive flash-burn of alcohol marking the slow progress. He imagines the pain burning away the ties to the past... to that moment on the table... to the grief over Zak... to his anger with Sam... to his guilt over Dee... to the endless heartaches and betrayals that once defined them... Even to his father. The growing shape of it – like a wound across his skin – one final act of contrition to all of these moments.

And then Kara goes.

He expects for her to laugh and joke with him, but she lays motionless, eyes pressed closed throughout. Her silence reminds him of how pain and suffering is every bit as much a part of her life as her laughter or strength. Her connection to him, a sacrifice every bit as real as his own.

The growing image covers the faded scars, blending into the silvery shapes of her first tattoo and creating their image anew. Partway through, Kara hisses in pain as the buzzing needle digs too deep into the soft flesh of her inner arm and Lee frowns, hating himself for suggesting it. But the process continues, and finally she stands, moving beside him to look at the finished design.

Arm in arm, they can see it appear in the mirror. It’s Aurora, her wings outspread, formed, like Apollo, from the rays of the sun, moving from Kara’s arm and onto his; the centre-point of the design resting over their hearts.

That was so lovely, K! I particularly liked how the actual ritual of tatooing was both a kind of remembrance and cleansing from past guilt and grief. Thank you for sharing!

Beautiful writing, manip and tattoo. I do like the idea of a clean slate, but that said, I don't think Kara would ever remove the original tattoo. I think she'd find a way to either combine/manipulate the tattoo (sort of like what Angelina Jolie does) or she'd just use another body part.

I wrote the removal as a response to Lee. My thought being that they've been together long enough that he's obviously asked her about marriage - and she's okay with that - but she doesn't get how much the other tattoo bothers him.

Why do I think this? Because she stopped wearing Zak's ring on her thumb when she married Sam. *shrugs* But personally (as I love Sam) I would have been happy with your direction too. Oh my. Such angst!

Good point. Just makes me sad she went through the painful removal process because of their fight. :( But I guess when it's time to let go, it's time to let go. So I can see your thinking there.
