There is an absolute a joy to discovering a fic that is completely different than the norm.  I think these people have done exactly that!  Their fiction puts a new slant on a well-established franchise and makes the fandom even better by challenging the standard and staid approaches.

Read through these AMAZING snippets of fic... and then go on to guess, argue, and figure out who wrote WHAT.

Selection M:

The first time Lee realized there was something he needed to do before he died, he was shooting Cylons. Attack number 99. Only 33 minutes respite between attacks. The regularity should have been reassuring, he thought absently. The predictability should appeal to his orderly nature, but all it did was make him calculate the odds over and over, count the attacks until the odds said he'd lose his edge and the metal motherfrakkers would blast him out of the sky. On that 99th attack, things became crystal clear for a moment and he decided. They'd avoided it long enough.

Selection N:

Lee thinks, for a long time after Kara disappears from the field, that he is going to die, and that, somehow, is cold comfort.  But life doesn’t comply with his passive wishes, and though his heart aches with each breath – as if it too is trying to tear free from his chest to join her – he plods through grey-hued days with perseverance.  “So strong,” he hears random people say.  “A survivor.”

He doesn’t correct them.

There’s no point, because Lee knows if he started to list the things he’s lost by losing her, by living here without her, he might never be able to stop.  There are some who tell him “it’ll get easier with time,” but as one week turns into a month, then a year and then five, he comes to realize that that statement itself is a lie.  It will never be easier.  Her face will always bring a lump of pain to his throat and a sharp sting of loss to his chest.

He will just become better at hiding it.

She is with his thoughts always.  Whispering and chattering; bits and pieces of conversations long past echoing in his ears.  Her laughter haunting him like an unquiet ghost. Things he’d forgotten: wry smiles, a stupid joke during CAP, the tiniest touches.  Sometimes angry moments – like that morning on New Caprica – now in retrospect seem so small and ill-used.  He should have hugged Kara tightly and wished her well as she left him, trusting somehow that she’d find her way back.  Leaving her in peace, instead of pain.  Giving him one less thing to regret now that he has nothing in the worlds left to do but sit here and think.

In time he forgets the timbre of her voice.  The exact colour of her hair.  He seeks her out in others then: the smile of Kacey (now long-since grown) and the random laughter of nameless children.  Time eventually robs Lee of his sight, and in the darkness he knows her again.  He thinks in feelings and emotions then – the way it felt to have her beside him flying his wing, the soft grain of her skin under his fingers in the dark.  The days slow, and spread in yielding loops of sleep and wakefulness that begin to meld together almost as one.

And finally, when he has lost all sense of her or himself at all... Kara returns.

Selection O:

Lee had heard it said, in some circles, that the eyes were the windows to the soul. If that was the case, then Kara's soul kept the blinds drawn more tightly than anyone else he'd ever known. But not today. Today, those windows were thrown wide, and what he saw inside terrified him. The tempest brewing there made complete sense of all her seeming insanity. Of course she was at home within the maelstrom of combat and fury. It was the very fiber that made up her entire being. Today the barriers she usually kept between herself and the rest of the world were gone and the only thing available to meet her was peace. Suddenly, in that vast and quiet stillness, Kara seemed small and lost and not sure she would find her way home if she walked out the door.

Selection P

Romo Lampkin made it his business to understand passions. Cross-examination was not a game of the courtroom but a way of life – an addiction. He traced patterns of influence through purses, stomachs, hearts and especially minds, fascinated by the confluence of pressures. Much of his life he’d been surrounded by the weak; criminals whose passions had overcome them at critical moments. The few honest men he’d known were more resistant, more scarred, more silent. Breaking that silence was a rare challenge.

He wasted a good twelve hours searching for Lee Adama’s passion before he realized the man carried it in his pocket.

He was a serial contrarian, and if contrariness had a face, it would be hers.

A slop of blonde hair and a rude grin. An old sweater, grey and drab beside the shine of her skin. A clutter of crap on the table that pointlessly delighted her. And at the edge of the frame, on the opposite side, the camera had caught the curve of a shoulder where her opponent sat stiff in a flight suit. Romo knew instinctively that it was Lee, leaning in to catch hell from her.

That blessed, mocking heat she projected must have felt amazing after the hours he spent flying in the dark.

Lampkin slipped the photograph back into Lee's pocket. He'd had enough stolen, and there was little left that could be returned.

His voice, though, and the forward cant of his arm as he leaned toward confrontation...

That much he might find again.

Hmm these are a little tough. Here are my guesses

M is Ninjamonkey because the voice is a little staccato, a little bit terse and that sounds like it might be her.

N is Kag523, because the first paragraph has some very descriptive bits that remind me of her tone and style (and I think she's trying to throw me off by using the british spelling of color!)

O is Jeneviverose, because there's something about the phrasing, esp "the only thing available to meet her is peace" and the reference to the quote/metaphor about eyes being the windows to the soul.

P is rachelindeed because I think she has a wonderful way of sizing up the pilots through outside eyes and that's on evidence here.

LOL. I'm RIGHT. I know it. In fact, I'm 99% positive that I know who wrote every single ficlet.

(Which means I need to get a life and stop reading so much fic probably. ;)

Okay, I'm pretty sure about N and P.

N is Karin's...her use of language and imagery...the way she grasps the emotion present...is very much her. (And yes, girl, I'm using my ellipses since you couldn't use yours.) ;)

P is Rachel's because she is always very analytical and using Romo really fits her.

I'm honestly not sure about Jen and Amy's because I haven't read enough of their other work...but I think, given Amy's profession, she would be more "to the point" and thus I am going with M for her. Jen usually seems more prosaic and the comments on Kara seem to fit with her views, so I'm going with O for her. These could be flip-flopped though, eek! (Sorry, ladies, I must read more of your fic!! You both have work on my to-read list.)

I feel pretty confident about Jen and Rachel, but we'll see. Kag, you are proving difficult...as I'm sure was your intention!

BTW, I now want a Kara Salander AU thanks to that manip. And I haven't even read the book. Or seen the movie.

Independent films, huh? Hee! Somehow, I'm not surprised this is how I'm categorized. :) Fun idea. Now, off to guess who wrote what in the other categories. :) (I'm so, so bad at recognizing voice in writing, though. Really. Bad.)

I'm sad too. :(
Don't take it personally, I misguessed pretty much everyone. LOL
I really suck at this. So most of the time I decided to just try a lucky guess. The few times I thought I knew who the writer was, I immediately thought "No, they are trying to fool us by doing something different."

Late to the party as usual, but gonna have a stab in the dark before I look at the answers

[livejournal.com profile] kag523 Can't decide between P and O. The others are too short for you. :P
[livejournal.com profile] rachelindeed N is my first impression. But maybe P.
[livejournal.com profile] jeneviverose guessing O
[livejournal.com profile] ninjamonkey73 that leaves M and shows me I am not familiar enough with her work, hehe. (which means something to read on the weekend!)

Just checking my score and this is the first one I have got some right on, bar a total guess on the last one!

Though I think I meant to say was a toss up between N and P for you, rather than O - since I made a comment about shortness and O is short!

I actually got 2.5 out of 4 here, hehe. Maybe 2 and 2 halves if you count my intentions rather than what I wrote :P
