Movie Stars
Oct. 5th, 2010 11:20 pmHi everyone! Sorry to be posting this a bit prematurely, but I will be getting up *way* too early tomorrow so I wanted to get the Wednesday entry up now in my less sleep-deprived state :)
I love movies, and sometimes I feel tempted to just plop Lee and Kara down into the middle of a great scene. It doesn't matter if there's no way it could fit into the BSG universe, sometimes it would just be fun. Or heartbreaking. For example:
1) Fun: Jumping the Bus in Speed (1994)
Yes, I admit it. I want to trap Lee and Kara and some civilians on a bus that's wired to explode if they drop below 55 miles per hour and then watch them jump a highway overpass. "It might be on an incline. Floor it!!" I am not ashamed. It would be awesome. Way better than "Sacrifice." This is the hostage situation I want for them :)
2) Heartbreaking: Trapped Together in The Abyss (1989)
I'm not sure how many of you will have seen this (it was the disaster-in-the-cruel-sea love story movie that James Cameron made *before* Titanic), but the situation is this: an estranged husband and wife, both amazing and tough as nails, wind up trapped out of range of their deep-sea home base in a small ship quickly filling with freezing water. There is only one life suit. The ex-wife comes up with a truly harrowing, out-of-the-box plan that might give them both a chance to survive. The crisis and its aftermath are heartbreaking and heartwarming to watch; it's one of the most intense, traumatic, moving portrayals of love in the face of death that I've seen on film. I want to put Kara and Lee through this exact drowning scenario, from the moment it starts to the moment it ends. You wouldn't have to change a word of dialogue, it's perfectly them.
What movie scene would you like to drop Kara and Lee into? Would you like to watch them swordfight in The Princess Bride? Kiss passionately in front of the blazing horizon in Gone With the Wind? Fly together over Metropolis in Superman? The sky's the limit!

Ha ha! That is *EXACTLY* what I've always thought, how funny! I've always said to my husband that if The Abyss had stuck with being a disaster movie, and not tried to be E.T. at the same time, it would have been one of the best ever made. Great minds think alike :)

Date: 2010-10-06 05:00 am (UTC)Frak, you had one of my ideas for my upcoming DPP week.XD"I love
AaronZak, I do, I really do." UM, nobody ever seems to have seen the version of East of Eden that has James Dean, but it just so happens to have this two-brothers-one-girl love triangle that I totally ate up. Abra and Kara are like night and day; I can't see her assailing Lee with questions about the women he's hooked up with like "What are girls like that like?", but really, why does she keep asking?Anyway, there is a carnival. And they get on the damn ferris wheel together. The reason why this is a bad idea happens just before 10 mins:
Here's another weird one: Practical Magic, as Sandra Bullock and Aidan Quinn's characters. I could totally dig Kara in that "GET AWAY FROM ME, HORRIBLE VOODOO THINGS HAPPEN TO MEN WHO FALL IN LOVE WITH ME" situation, and of course him being the cop who, against his ethical judgment, promises he'll do anything in his power to keep her out of jail.
Jim and Selena in 28 Days Later. I don't have a particular scene in mind, but the premise of them first meeting in that kind of situation is pretty intriguing.
And I have to name Star Trek XI, but it's not what you'd think. Kara cheating Lee's Kobayashi Maru feels like the best academy!fic I've never read.

Date: 2010-10-06 12:55 pm (UTC)I love Kara and Lee's Voodoo Cop Love. Yay!
And you're so right about Star Trek. That scene was made for them, as was the later scene on the bridge:
Kara: "I'm coming with you."
Lee: "I would cite regulations, but I know you will simply ignore them."
Kara: "See? We are getting to know each other." (slaps his shoulder obnoxiously)
Lee: (mild death glare)
Hee! (P.S. -- I know this just makes me a Trek nerd, but I love the way they stage the Kobyashi Maru with Jim munching on an apple. It seems like a deliberate call-back to the moment in Wrath of Kahn when he first tells the story of this incident to Saavik while munching on an apple in the Genesis cave. "I don't like to lose." I love it!)

Date: 2010-10-06 01:13 pm (UTC)You and kag523 are doing an *amazing* job with P & P. So fantastic. SQUEEEEEEEE!
PS - one of the conversations from the book that I find most perfect for Kara and Lee is one that never gets included in any filmed version, not even the uber-faithful Firth/Ehle miniseries. It's their after-engagement chat where Lizzy teases him for ever having fallen for someone so inappropriate as her:
Lizzy: "How could you begin? I can comprehend your going on charmingly when you had once made a beginning, but what could set you off in the first place?"
Darcy: "I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look, or the words which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun."
Lizzy: "My beauty you had early withstood, and as for my manners -- my behavior to you was at least always bordering on the uncivil...Now be sincere: did you admire me for my impertinence?"
Darcy: "For the liveliness of your mind, I did."
Lizzy: "You may as well call it impertinence at once, it was very little less."
I love that he falls for her because she's marvellously rude, and she calls him on it! **hugs my fictional peeps**

Date: 2010-10-06 01:06 pm (UTC)Yup, 10 Things I Hate About You (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0147800/). Kara is the moody Kat, Lee does his best badboy routine as Patrick. There is quiet smolder and angry words and Shakespeare.
Uh-huh. Titanic (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120338/). Only Kara is Jack and Lee is Rose.
And for the trifecta of yeah-she-went-there:
OMG, you guys! Fast planes! Tight uniforms! A chippy, short actor with chiselled good looks and something to prove! I went there. Top Gun (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092099/)

So perfect! LOL!
And kudos for bringing in James Cameron's other love-and-disaster-at-sea epic. The angst! The romance! The way Kara knows that she's going to die and still says being a part of this disaster was the luckiest thing that ever happened to her, because he was worth it. The way that Lee goes on after her death but never forgets. **hugs**
I feel like I should bring in Aliens and make it a Cameron kind of day. Can't you see the alien monster busting in after Kacey, and Kara stepping out in that loading machine thing and saying "Stay away from her, you bitch!"

Date: 2010-10-07 12:49 am (UTC)And I really must read Pride and Prejudice, right? I know the story, of course. I have seen the movie. I even started reading the book once but my English was not very good and I gave up. *adds it to list of "to read" books - the one that gets bigger and bigger everyday*

Maybe. I might.
I hope not, 'cause you know, relationships that start under intense circumstances, they never last.
Oh yeah?
Yeah, I've done extensive study on this.
I second Star Trek too. Kara + Sulu FTW!
I would also pick....
I'm getting a bit mushy but I love it so much. Sweet Home Alabama.
What do you want to be married to me for, anyhow?
So I can kiss you anytime I want.
