Aside from the obvious attraction, Kara and Lee seem to view the world in many different ways. How would you describe their individual value systems and how do they contribute positively or negatively to their relationship?
In using the word "values" I mean the whole range of human spirits, values, attitudes, principles and emotions. Here is a list I culled from the Humanity Quest website that seemed to be related to pilots in some way:
acceptance, adventure, addiction, atonement, authority, belief, bravery, boredom, character, commitment, compromise, conformity, control, curiosity, cynicism, desire, dependability, devotion, depression, empathy, egotism, equality, energy, fairness, faith, fear, forgiveness, friendship, gluttony, guilt, honesty, honor, humor, idealism, independence, impatience, insanity, integrity, intimacy, jealousy, judgment, laughter, leadership, loss, love, loyalty, mistakes, morality, obsession, optimism, passion, perseverance, persistence, planing, pleasure, pragmatism, promises, rapture, realism, regret, rejection, reliability, remorse, righteousness, ruthlessness, sadness, sarcasm, sacrifice, self-control, self-destructiveness, self-respect, sentimentality, shame, sobriety, spirituality, strength, stress, surrender, tenacity, tenderness, trust, truth, understanding, violence, vulnerability
Read them through and see what pops out at you. Write meta, write fic, describe a particular scene that embodies one of these values for pilots, post a corresponding screen cap, or use one of your own values and give us some thinky thoughts.
I'll just pick a few to get us started (and don't feel compelled to use the ones above - talk about whatever you like).
Mistakes:
My first thought about this is Kara's mistake with Zak in allowing him to pass his flight test. Immediately following that thought however, is forgiveness, and how she was forgiven by both Adama and Lee. And then Lee's speech in Crossroads, which is as much about mistakes and forgiveness as any part of the show.

Jealousy:

Acceptance:

ETA: Starbuck is disappointed that our 99 Bottles of Ambrosia drinking game got stuck at #35 (she's barely buzzed). Run there now and make comment. I'd like to see some hilarious ones (or some kinky porny hot ones). Thanks to everyone to contributed yesterday.

They are both afraid to trust themselves to and with another person, hence their moments of retreat from each other.
3) Conformity - neither of them are conformists. Lee respects lawful authority, but when he thinks it's being misapplied he looks for ways to challenge it. He can play the system for his own ends, or confront it directly.
Kara is more vocal in issuing her challenges, but also more willing to surrender her judgment to people she respects. Her loyalty shines through the most when someone she loves asks her to break - or to obey - their rules.

Date: 2010-09-22 02:35 am (UTC)Certain that something is happening, but not sure what yet, Kara’s hands are on her hips, cocky and smiling. She raises her eyes to see people from around the room approaching her like sleepwalkers, others, including Admiral Adama and Saul Tigh, are standing on the raised catwalk above her, faces cold. Her smile wavers as the crowd nears. She laughs nervously, before looking back to the Chief. “What’s up?” She asks, perplexed.
She catches Helo’s face the moment after she says it, and her heart catches in her throat. His look of horrified concern, his lips pressed together, brows lowered in anger, are what tips her off that she has done something very bad... but what? She doesn’t yet know.
This is the moment when Lee finally breaks through the crowd, running to her and pulling her bodily into his arms, hugging her tightly. Lifting her off the ground for a moment in his excitement. His heart is pounding loudly in his ears, the unbelievable feel of holding her again overwhelming him.
The other half of his heart has returned.
They stand, arms wrapped around one another, his hands at her waist and the back of her head, running through her hair, leaning in to whisper brokenly into her ear. “Love you.” “Okay... okay... Me too...” Kara says, responding to his ardent declaration. Despite her growing alarm, she hugs him warmly, returning the embrace. She rubs Lee’s back soothingly.
She doesn’t care that half the viper squadron and the entire deck crew is watching her do it. Everyone knows that Starbuck and Apollo have their own rules of behaviour; conventions don’t apply to these two. Tears are on Lee’s face, his breathing rough against Kara’s ear, overwhelmed. “It’s okay,” she whispers to him, staying in the circle of his arms, pressing herself against him. For Lee, the feel of it – her warm body in his arms, her strong hands on him once again – puts everything into perspective... the foolishness of their fighting, the stupidity of denying what lies between them.
She is his touchstone; he hasn’t been alive since she left.

Date: 2010-09-22 06:06 am (UTC)Bravery The two of them have it in spades. They both give of themselves unconditionally in a way. They sacrifice so much, give so much because they have a job to do and they do it well. In the face of utter hopelessness, Starbuck & Apollo are the first to come in and take charge. The saddest thing is that their bravery is saved for the outside world, for anyone else but themselves. They are not brave enough to give in to their feelings for each other, to jump in with both feet and trust that the other person will be there to catch them. When it comes to Kara & Lee, bravery is replaced with Fear .
Oh boy do these two have and abundance of Self Destruction . Most people assume that Kara is the self destructive one: she's the one who ruins every good thing she has in her life because she doesn't feel like she deserves, because "I'm a screw up Lee. Remember that." But what about Lee? He self destructs by always trying to over-think, over-analyze and ultimately, do more for others - Sacrifice himself - than he does for himself. He doesn't go after what he wants - what he REALLY wants - because it does not fit with the expectations everyone has of him. While Kara deliberately and purposely self destructs, Lee does it subconsciously.
Lee shows his Tenderness more readily, but Kara has her tender moments too. In her own way, she cares and cares deeply and when she lets all the walls drop, can be heartbreakingly tender.

Date: 2010-09-22 11:56 am (UTC)Kara's version of dependability comes less in the emotional realm (of course) and more in the way everyone can count on her in a fight - she can be depended upon to save the day, to make some "retina-detaching" move that will complete the mission. Taking a closer look, it seems that Kara is also dependably loyal and can be expected to take and follow most orders. (Although, as mentioned above, she does defy orders when she needs to.)
