I'm not having the best of weeks so I thought we'd talk about something that normally cheers me up. Love it or hate it, everyone seems to have an option about...


BABYFIC!

When it's done right (sometimes even if it's done wrong), there's no denying there's some great fic out there to read. What is your opinion on it? Is it a love/love, or love/hate? So let me have your best recommendations.

Now, this probably isn't the best written fic out there, but it was one of the first fics I read where Kara and Lee had a child. I still like to go back for a re-read every now and then.

Insanity Underrated by amidala_thrace
In case you're living under a rock, this fic is still a WIP but there's usually a chapter or two a week. One of the best representations I've seen of Kara and Lee having a child together.

Sort-of AU - What if the move to New Caprica took and everyone settled down. Now what happens when Kara wants a child and Sam can't have any because of his time spent on Caprica. Who does she turn to?

Also, does anyone have any good recommendations where either Kacey ends up staying with Kara or is really her daughter? I really don't see enough of those fics anywhere!

I'm a sucker for babyfic. I'll read nearly anything. I'll admit that part of it is wish fulfillment in seeing Pilots committed to each other and (mostly) happy, but I'm also fascinated by how a child would change their lives.

If anything, that's the main frustration I have with babyfic. Having a child is enormously complicated in the best of circumstances. Even if they were able to establish a happy, healthy relationship, Kara and Lee would have so many issues to consider, both internal and external. Kara would probably be against abortion because of her religion, but having a child would greatly impact so many other parts of her life. Though we don't know where Lee stands, I think he could go either way on wanting children. And then there are all the other external issues. Lack of resources, for one. Two working pilots who could be killed in the blink of an eye, leaving the other to raise the child alone. And the greater issue of choosing to bring a child into such a dangerous, precarious world, no matter how much the fleet might need to repopulate.

Those issues aren't insurmountable, of course. I've seen fic which balances everything beautifully and realistically. But I really like fic in which Kara and Lee give serious consideration to all the potential problems before they make that choice, even if the pregnancy is unplanned. It's easy to give them a cursory discussion before throwing themselves into decorating the nursery -- and I've certainly written that sort of fic myself! -- but I crave fanfic in which they address all the possibilities (including abortion) and really feel the weight of what will happen, then find ways to handle it. :)

(Ugh, I had a much better argument in my brain, but I can't remember any of it now. So I'll just conclude by thanking jeebs83 for the great topic, and spend this weekend reading over all the recs here!)

Hmmmm. That's a good question. None that I can think of. My mind goes to some of 's fics, but those are mostly AU/future!fic stories.

Yeah, I did think of that one, but...not really what I had in mind. I think there's a real shortage of fic where they are actually committed or where Kara actively wants a baby so it makes sense... I was just curious.

I'm a sucker for babyfic...in moderation. There's been plenty of times when I've wanted to write more babyfic but held myself back. And I get much more excited about reading pregnancy fic than actual raising baby fic. I love the angst involved in Kara/Lee finding out they're going to be parents but aren't in a relationship (because usually they're with the alterna partners) and how they work through the tangled mess to come together. I love fluff but it has to be earned. I also get totally jazzed when K/L have to reveal that there's an Adama junior on its way to papadama!

Next to babyfic I find I really love childfic. Jei's As the Earth, She Revolves (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3549334/1/As_the_Earth_She_Revolves) gets me everytime I read it. And there's a couple of WIPS out there I really wish were updated. Schisms (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4658308/1/Schisms) (of which there's 6 chapters) and Edge (http://community.livejournal.com/beyond_insane/730342.html) (of which there's 10 chapters).

But the most important reason to love babyfic is genetics!! Starbuck & Apollo? Does it get any prettier than that?

The saddest baby in all BSG fanfiction is wisteria_'s Jack. I want to cry just thinking about him.

I was checking out the whole thread right now and I am so excited with so many recs (I haven't read most of them, so yay!). Seriously, if I don't become a convert after that... ;) Thanks for the great topic!

ETA. I totally forgot, but I want to rec ”Making Babies” (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5255747/1/Making_Babies). This is a sort of anti-Kara/Lee baby fic --a baby!fic without the actual baby--, and that's probably the reason why I love it so much (sorry!); the cuteness, the banter, Kara and Lee’s characterizations, everything about it rings very true. And the ending... so bittersweet and so them, gah! I truly believe they would have had some pretty amazing kids.

I've just realized that I made a huge mistake--I left off possibly my favorite babyfic of all time. It's unfinished, but the existing chapters are absolutely exquisite. Kara is pregnant and she doesn't want to be. She doesn't know if it's Sam's or Lee's, and essentially cuts them out of her decisions. If you've seen the movie "Waitress," it really reminds me of that in the way Kara and Jenna react to pregnancy.
