[identity profile] winegums.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] no_takebacks
We've had a comfortably quiet week here, and it's been nice (I would like to speculate that it is because people are following the collective meltdown of one of the most annoying fandoms in existence in the wake of scandalous celeb gossip, but that's just me and my cackling, plus my eternal gratitude that we're not anything like that level of crazy).

And speaking of firsts, here is a pic of the first moment that made me really start shipping pilots:

It's almost the weekend, and in honour of that I'm inviting everyone to have a trip down memory lane - tell us about the first pilots fic you remember reading/liking, or alternatively, the first pilots fic you ever wrote! (for those of us who've written fic, that is - discussion of meta, fanvids and fanmixes is also welcome - the more the merrier!)

Yesterday's post, on what other characters might have thought of pilots, is still up so feel free to tell us what you think of that too, if you feel like it.

The first BSG fanfic I read was flowrs4ophelia's Where Soul Meets Body (http://flowrs4ophelia.livejournal.com/110275.html). I clicked to read it on impulse because I liked the author's Harry Potter fic -- I had never watched an episode of BSG at the time, but I was pretty sure given the quality of her writing that it would be a good story, and I thought it might give me a sense of whether I'd like to try watching the show.

Unfortunately, that particular story is basically totally incomprehensible if you haven't seen 4 seasons worth of BSG, so mainly I thought, "Gosh, this all sounds intense and confusing. Must be nice for the people who are into it." And then I wandered off again for another year or two :)

Gosh, I can't remember which fic I read of theirs first. (I can't even remember the first general BSG fic, TBH.) The first I wrote which included a big chunk 'o' Lee (as the main of her partners in a multiship fic series) was The Otherside.

Awww, that's when I totally fell in love as well (except for the hair - I thought it was practical but oh so hideous!) I think my first read was something by Claira... which totally made me like "hiatus, what hiatus?" *grin* between the miniseries and Season 1. Tim Goodman, then of the SF Chronicle and my favorite tv critic, raved about BSG so much I had to netflix the miniseries. Remember when RDM was like "if you want to write fanfic, I'm not coming after you" in one of the early podcasts? That's how I learned there was such a thing. Too bad the writers didn't take any notes!

I'm pretty sure the first K/L fic I ever read was a little oldie called Water (http://fried-flamingo.livejournal.com/18289.html).

I tried to stay away from BSG fanfic for awhile, because I knew that the show had a MASSIVE fan following and there would be fic out the wazoo and I would end up being spoiled for all of the seasons I hadn't watched yet. But by the time I had hit the end of season 1 I just had to try and find something with out spoiling myself.

Somehow I stumbled across [livejournal.com profile] reelpilots and a link to The Cutting Edge (http://taragel.livejournal.com/132069.html) (My favorite movie of all time BTW).

The first story I ever wrote was Whom The Gods Would Destroy (http://palis-delon.livejournal.com/527.html). A drabble playing with the Apollo and Daphne myth.

I am pretty sure that the first BSG fic I read was [livejournal.com profile] leda13’s ”Fearful Symmetry” (http://leda13.livejournal.com/26457.html#cutid1), which became one of my favorite Kara-centered pieces in fandom (yeah, I am a lucky girl because that was a hell of an introduction IMO, hee). Also, I think the first LJ I started like seriously lurking was [livejournal.com profile] taragel’s journal. I was such a stalker, lol. Ah, good times! And so much fun :)

Ha, I find this story about your BSG fic introduction quite amusing. No wonder you didn't get a thing, and then you forgot all about BSG for two years, lol. But seriously, that story is super amazing! [livejournal.com profile] flowrs4ophelia is so talented, I wish she had written more for BSG.

Yeah, it was a real pleasure to come back and read it again once I watched the show. I was like: "I always suspected this must be awesome, and now I see I was right!" :)

Fanfic window shopping is an odd little pastime, but fun. Good authors tend to write good stories, whatever they're writing about, and it's cool (though often confusing) to dip your toes into a new set of characters and a different world that way. There are some stories out there that I love a lot without particularly loving the actual source material. Comic books for instance -- I basically can't stand any actual graphic novel I've ever picked up and tried to read, but I know quite a lot about comic book storylines because there's great fanfic out there.

I barely remember the fic, haha, I should reread that author's few K/L things.

And oh, Sherlock ♥

I think the first fic I read might have been the wonderful Detour (http://brynnmck.livejournal.com/22833.html) by [livejournal.com profile] brynnmck. First fic I wrote was Brotherly Advice (http://taragel.livejournal.com/3644.html#cutid1).

Wow. It's been a while since the first fic I read. I'm almost certain it was something by Latteaddict though, which aren't up anymore. Pretty much fell in love with pilots fic thanks to her and there is some fic that have become my personal canon. I should mention that I love pilots fic (if that wasn't obvious). The first fic I ever wrote for pilots, now that I know. I wrote a piece that implied pilots, but then I went all out pilots. Called My Imaginary and it's here: http://shinyfab.livejournal.com/1868.html#cutid1. Though it's been a while since I wrote pilots, I still have a story I write on once every few months or so.
