To the Rescue!
May. 24th, 2012 09:20 amHappy Thursday, everyone!
I don't know about you, but when I have two heroic characters who are in love with each other, I often feel the temptation to put one of them in danger just for the pleasure of seeing the other one come to the rescue. Kara's 'beyond insane' maneuver in the miniseries and her 'I could do this all day' bling during the mutiny are classic examples.
Today, I'd love for you to share an idea about how Lee might rescue Kara, or Kara might rescue Lee (or both could work together to rescue themselves, buddy-cops style). Your idea can be a comment, or a drabble or ficlet if you feel inspired. It can be canon, AU, crossover, anything! You can put them in physical jeopardy, emotional jeopardy, or anything inbetween. Let's watch Kara and Lee save each other the best way they know how, because that's clearly what they're meant to do :)
"Damsel in Distress, currently on fire." // "Would you like to be rescued?" // "Skip polite, go right to action."

I would've liked to have seen that play out instead of the "shocking death" we got. <3

For some reason, I just love the idea of Lee feeling forced to save Kara during that period when he was still for raw and hurt by her.

It's interesting that this storyline has been known around fandom for ages and yet I don't remember anyone doing it in fic -- have you ever seen it in someone's story?
I used to play around with a 'rescue' story idea that I never really wrote more than snippets of, where Kara and Lee were both in the Cloud Nine Bar when it's stormed by terrorists in 'Sacrifice.' What could be really fun, I think, is to have them both trying to outsmart each other because Lee wants to make sure that if anyone gets hurt it will be him not her, and Kara of course is doing the same regarding him (and rather more effectively). So they're kind of fighting each other a bit, each setting themselves up as the 'expendable' one, while at the same time trying to look out for the civilians. It's a cliche, sure, but that 'no, *I'm* the expendable one, not you!' trope tugs at my heartstrings :)

Date: 2012-05-24 10:26 pm (UTC)I also love it when a couple going through a hard time are suddenly facing life or death and putting everything on the line for each other. It's a strange but beguiling dynamic to see in a long relationship with a lot of baggage, that two people can be in a place of not liking each other but still know in their hearts that *beneath that* they love each other more than life.

I feel sometimes like the on again, off again angst fest that TV typically uses needs a change up and something like this, an imperfect couple, would be fascinating.

Date: 2012-05-25 03:21 pm (UTC)I totally agree with Tara about the show needing more of Lee physically saving Kara and Kara psychologically/emotionally beign there for Lee. It shouldn't be so difficult. Kara and her beyond insane moves should put her in difficulty pretty often. And Lee's many bottled up issues and his depression tendencies could easily provide opportunities for some emotional rescue. Not that Kara didn't need that as well.
Does anyone have any good recs that deal with this topic?
Jamie and Katee also love K/L rescues, apparently

Date: 2012-05-26 11:35 pm (UTC)Blown Away (http://taragel.livejournal.com/48706.html) (Smutstrav Chapter 5 ) - this is my favorite and most literal instance of Lee physically saving Kara's life and Kara's reaction to it...kind of says it all I think)
A BSG/Bionic Woman crossover (http://users.livejournal.com/wisteria_/853934.html?thread=16513454#t16513454), where Kara and Lee save themselves from the evil Sarah Corvus
Being Alive (http://taragel.livejournal.com/7690.html#cutid2) & Nine Lives (http://taragel.livejournal.com/164307.html#cutid1) -- where Kara takes drastic moves to pull Lee out of his funk after his little spacewalk
Some other peeps' great saving fics:
daphnaea's The Reasons and its remix by Fahye: A Sunny Day In Tartarus (The Nameless Things Remix) (http://mercurial-wit.livejournal.com/38860.html) --in which Kara writes Lee a letter with reasons to live after his spacewalk
Gah my memory is failing. That's all I got right now.
