Howdy :)

So yesterday was fun, we talked about our favourite UFT's and by the way, if any of you missed the latter portion of the discussion which was directed mainly by [livejournal.com profile] nazkey , [livejournal.com profile] amaliak , and [livejournal.com profile] pali167  you should go check it out, it is FASS-TASTIC!

Today we're gonna talk a little bit about music, even though I'm certain that it's has been done before. It strikes me that pilots fandom is relatively short on song-fics, where most fandoms feed on them. And ok, I'm not the world's biggest fan of song-fics, my experience of them is that they are often clumsy and made lazy by virtue of being able to rely on lyrics to say what you want to without having to think of how you word it for yourself. I am however, interested in fic inspired by music, that doesn't necessarily use the song as part of the story.

Now, I know a lot of you guys are really into poetry and have written many wonderful fics inspired by/based around poetry. But what about songs?

Do you guys have favourite pilots songs? Have you written fics that were inspired by particular pieces of music/songs? Have you written actual song-fics? Does anyone have songs that they wish someone would write pilots fic based around? It's a musical free for all!

And to get you started, here are a few songs that make me think of pilots.

By the way, they're slightly abstract occasionally in their pilots-affiliation, I can't tell you exactly why all of them work for me.

The Moth - By Aimee Mann

4am - By Cherry Ghost

Don't Leave - By Faithless

Painted on my heart - By The Cult:

And this one, which I think might be kind of a fun AU if someone wants to play,

Whiskey in Mind - By Christian Kane

Everyone feel free to jump in with your songs, fic-recs, prompts or just general feelings. Or, if you feel like it, gifs of hot men being hot, because that's allowed too :)

For the Fic swap, I rewrote a lovely piece by [livejournal.com profile] rayruz entitled In Another Life which uses the song "In Another Life" by Vienna Tang as its base.

Ray's original piece can be found here:
http://tulipfic.livejournal.com/52453.html

My remix of it (called "The Next Time 'Round" is here:
http://kag523.livejournal.com/158200.html

There was also a song challenge on the 12 Colonies comm ages ago, and I had no idea what I was doing so I totally got off topic changed the rules a bit and created this. It's sort of a song remix (removing the lyrics from the original Oasis song and adding in BSG lyrics):

Apparently it gets upset with links that aren't on some sort of whitelist because of all the spammers, so quarantines them by default. Apparently it's a feature that can be turned off in community management (another comm I'm on got bitten by the feature...)

Okay, so recently I was thinking about this a bit while I was washing up and listening to my MP3 player.

I think Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah", Savage Garden's "Crash and Burn", Jessica Riddle's "Even Angels Fall" and Sister Hazel's "Beautiful Thing" would all describe elements of Pilots quite well.

I write to music all the time, and as a result, a lot of my fics--both fan and original--have unofficial soundtracks. And with fanfiction, I often steal titles from the lyrics.

Let's see...
Hold Me Sway (http://shah-of-blah.livejournal.com/12160.html) was written to Dimming of the Day by Richard & Linda Thompson (and the title is stolen from it).
The Disappearing Ground (http://shah-of-blah.livejournal.com/24451.html) was written while listening to Rilo Kiley's "The Good That Won't Come Out" on repeat.
The Other Side (of This Life) (http://bsg-remix.livejournal.com/5779.html) was written to David Byrne's "The Other Side of This Life."
Drink in the Dawn (http://shah-of-blah.livejournal.com/60197.html) (BSG/DW) was written to the song "Waltzing's for Dreamers" by Richard Thompson, although other people might not totally get the connection.

And I once did this fic meme thing (http://shah-of-blah.livejournal.com/11402.html) where you put your ipod on shuffle and write ten drabbles based on the songs that come up.

"The Disappearing Ground was written while listening to Rilo Kiley's "The Good That Won't Come Out" on repeat."

I was literally just going to post this song as reminding my of pilots! Literally right this second. Especially . . . "You say I chose sadness but it never once has chosen me." I knew I recognized that title from somewhere. :)

I'm not a fan of songfic because most of the music I'm into seems to be, well, instrumental. But I've always loved this and thought it was perfect for pilots, there's something about the romance and yearning and epicness of pilots that fits this like nothing else I've ever heard.

Since you're new to BSG... You've seen the Starbuck/Pink vids by the incomparable [livejournal.com profile] dualbunny right? Because they are not to be missed.

I know, the song is too perfect for pilots! Like, almost every line. I especially like "all of the good that won't come out of me/and all the stupid lies I hide behind/It's such a big mistake/lying here in your warm embrace." That, and everything else.

Not sure the embed of that last link worked, here goes with a link this time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4fcqHVkxqE&feature=related

And if we're sticklers for music with lyrics, there's another one from the same soundtrack that I think fits Lee and Kara to a T: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Wymr7LdddE&feature=related

I've done lots of pilots and starbuck vids to different artists (esp pink for Starbuck), but fics...

Let's see one I wrote Last Night of the World (http://taragel.livejournal.com/44074.html#cutid1), was not inspired by the Miss Saigon song of the same name but when I was trying to come up with a title, that's what I got and that reminded me of the song and when I listened to it again (as I hadn't heard it in a while) the lyrics were so perfect that I had to quote them at the top of the fic.

And my story This Clock Never Seemed So Alive (http://taragel.livejournal.com/154677.html) takes it's title from Lifehouse's You and Me which is a quintessential pilots song for me (all about the eyefrak, baby!)

Am trying to think if there are other piloty songfics that I enjoy. Not many in this fandom. Rachelindeed's Kara/Lee: The Musical is one of my favorite fandom creations EVER though. And someone did a pilots fic in the structure of The Last Five Years...way back. Oh and someone also did one to Sick Cycle Carousel by Lifehouse.

Here's as short a list as I could manage as things were starting to spiral out of control. Every song I hear seems to fix whatever situation I'm thinking about to a ri-donk-ulous degree.

Missy Higgins - The Special Two

Peter Gabriel - The Book of Love (every time I hear this I see the story of Kara/Lee/Sam/Zak playing in my brain . . . well that and the Scrubs finale)

A Fine Frenzy - Almost Lover

The Kinks - This Time Tomorrow (more for BSG all together than just Kara/Lee though)

Social Distortion - Reach For The Sky (again, for all of BSG)

Neko Case - Hold On, Hold On

Johnny Cash – Hurt

Aron Wright – Song For The Waiting

Florence And The Machine – Cosmic Love

The Tallest Man On Earth – The Wild Hunt

Blue October - Hate Me

Aaaaaaand, yes that's off topic, so I'm going to put it back on topic by saying: (Using a Tracey Morgan voice)

OMG - I include bits and pieces of this soundtrack ALL THE TIME when I make fic soundtracks. (Because yeah... when I'm done writing my brain won't turn off.) Love these choices!

I have a whole pile of soundtracks that I have put together on my journal (and they're downloadable if you want them). Basically as soon as I start writing a longfic, I start creating a soundtrack that fits what I'm doing and they tend to be songs I play over and over. Although Lee's songs vary by fic, this particular song "A Song for Holly" by Esthero is my 'go-to' sexy Kara song. It shows up almost all the time and I absolutely love it!

I can make you want me
I can make you think you need me too...
I can reassure you that all your lies you tell yourself are true...

And if you won't let me go
I'm just harder to hold, no
I'll never let you gain control, no, no...

I'm not myself lately
I'm not even sure i know me
But i'm worth more than my name
And all the lies i tell myself are true...

You can try but it's never enough with you behind me
Because when push comes to shove, i fall
And it's my turn to handle myself now
