Poof? What Poof?
Hi Kara/Lee shippers! I'm
sci_fi_shipper, aka Heather, and I will be driving the DPP train this week. For my first post, I'm going all the way to the very end.
Imagine the poof never happened. Nor did something else...
Kara leaned against a tree watching the two men walk together, father and son, arms linked, strolling alongside the sparkling river. The planet was beautiful, everything that Laura had said it would be, all that Kara had hoped it could be. As she watched them come towards her, she felt at peace, calm in the knowledge that she had fulfilled her destiny; she’d jumped to the right coordinates, she’d led them to their end.
Something had shifted inside her that day when the blue and white planet had come into view. No longer was she the disconnected harbinger of death, experiencing life on the fringes, watching, participating, but never fully living. Now, she felt like her old self, alive, vibrant, ready to leave her destiny behind and to begin her own journey on her own terms.
Lee smiled as he walked towards her, face bright and young and fresh with hope. With his eyes on Kara, he squeezed his father’s arm and the two men parted ways. Adama smiled sadly at Kara before he turned to leave and she knew why: Laura did not have long. She’d played her part in their journey – the dying leader whose final step was about to be taken.
As they watched the older man walk away, Kara reached out for Lee's hand. They began to walk along the river, strolling quietly for a while before Kara spoke, “So, what were you and the old man talking about?”
Lee glanced over at her and smiled. “I was telling dad about the plans to start fresh on this new planet. A decision to leave it all behind - the ships, the technology, the weapons. To try not to make the same mistakes we did before. We’re going to take a vote – put it to the people. Let them decide what kind of future to have.”
Kara stopped walking. Their arms stretched out, fingers still linked until Lee faced her with a curious expression.
“You’re doing what?” she asked, incredulous.
“We’re thinking of sending the technology into the sun. We don’t need it. We can start over, leave it all behind. Start with a clean slate.” He smiled at her, proud of his idea.
“Lee,” she said, closing the gap between them to plant a brief kiss on his lips. “That is the stupidest idea I have ever heard.”
Now what? What does their life look like? How do you imagine they would contribute to the new society? What would their lives look like on a daily basis? Would they be leaders or have a supporting role? What special expertise would they offer to the new society? Would they go off into the mountains or help build their new life with the others.
And, of course, what would they do together now that they have the time, the freedom, and the safety, with no restrictions, to simply be together. Kara and Lee on Earth. What say you?
ETA: Now with "Foreman Kara" and Lee building their very own dream home. Hee. ;)
ETA: NOW WITH COMIC BOOK KARA AND LEE! WOOO HOOO!!!!!!!!

1. Yay, H, you're driving the DPP train this week? I can't wait to see what you have in store for us. *twirls ya*
2. THIS: He smiled at her, proud of his idea.
“Lee,” she said, closing the gap between them to plant a brief kiss on his lips. “That is the stupidest idea I have ever heard.”
3. Buhbai special destiny, welcome back our Kara!!
4. To answer your question, of course they would serve their time as Admiral Thrace and President Adama. B/c they've earned it. I agree with Tara though: after a few years they get to go explore, relax, fight/frak/love in peace. B/c they've earned that too.
*scatters fluffiness and pilot love across the comm*

I think she'd want to get her hands dirty and they'd all be thrilled to settle down and make a community - but I think she'd still like to fly and see the stars once in a while. And what, no litter viper-pilot-wanna-be kids? Nah. Roughing it ain't all it's cracked up to be. ;)

The thing is they would lose alot of their tech as it broke down and they lacked the supplies and the people to fix it. However by saving it they could have keep a certain level of technology, and could have turned things around alot faster. In the rush to demonize technology they forget how many people would needlessly die due to the lack of it. The poof was for pure shock, and because they didn't have a clue what she was. Leave it vague and let us fill the blanks.
My vision would be them be leaders of the new civilization. With Roslin dead and I would think Adama at least retired, they would need to fill the roles of military and government leadership. Course the military's only real responsibility would be to protect people from the wildlife and native people. I see Lee and Kara starting over taking it slow and eventually getting married and have some kids. At the time of the finale Dee is not even long dead yet, and Sam has just died, so rushing things would be foolish and with their present circumstances no rush.
Also I think after doing so many things wrong, they want to take their time and do things right.

As for the equipment, I believe they have a mining ship and I'm guessing some way to fabricate new items - at least from metal. And as a battlestar, I'd guess there are some small metalworking machinery. Since the are no longer at war with the cylons, they could reasonably search for ore throughout the galaxy if they wanted to. I'd imagine that the joining cylons could also use some of their technological innovations to maintain equipment, too, or to create living machinery like the basestars and raiders? (Or did the cylons give all of their ships to the centurions?)
At a minimum, I think they could easily maintain much of their simpler equipment for many generations, although the computers and highly technical items might fail sooner than later.

I love this idea of Lee and Kara starting out slowly, courting almost, though even they maybe know where it's going to end up.

"I don't think that goes there," Lee says, as he watches Kara trying to fit a large bundle of brush onto the roof of their makeshift shelter.
Kara snickers and nearly drops her roofing materials. "That's what she said," she says, laughing so loudly that far across the field, Helo and Sharon turn to see what's going on. "Wait 'til I come down there, Prez, I'll give you a tutorial on what goes where."
"I'm pretty sure I've got it figured it out," Lee mumbles, turning away to hide the blush spreading over his face.

Having matured through the trials of the last season or two, I like to think of them as being much less, I don't know, frantic than the earlier seasons Lee and Kara. Although I don't doubt things can still get all hot-up-against-a-tree, my image of their first time together on Earth is very slow and deliberate. How much thought have I put into this? Now, never you mind!
no subject
This. I am very much with you. If they didn't take it slow on Earth there is just no way they'd ever be able to make it work, and I like to think they were aware of this themselves (the need to not barrel into things, that is, but to just enjoy the time they had together) in S4 from their scenes in Islanded and Revelations, etc. They'd grown up a lot in that way, imo.
1/2
She'd been walking for hours now, and still no sign of her camp. She bit her lip and pulled out the map she'd been working on, a rolled up hide of an animal skinned long ago.
"Frak," she muttered as she stared at the map, and back up at her landscape. Trees, trees and more trees. Oh, look, there's a rock. One she'd never seen before. Great.
"Starbuck, what's your 20?" the voice that she heard in her ear nearly made her jump. It had been so long since she'd used a comm, it was strange to remember she wasn't truly alone.
"I have no frakking idea, Apollo," she responded, finally sitting down on the rock before her and giving her feet a well deserved rest. "I think I took a wrong turn somewhere."
"Roger that. Can you tell me which direction you went after the last marker?"
Kara stared at her map, looking at the last discernible point before the big blank space. "Once I passed the waterfall, I headed directly south, about five clicks and then headed west. I thought I'd end up hitting the camp after walking half a click, but I think that the map is wrong."
She knew Lee was staring at his own version of her map. A few months ago, they'd decided to put themselves to good use and actually map out the area they'd been exploring the last year.
"Helo, could you fly by 7 clicks south west of marker 8? Report if you get a visual on Starbuck."
"Copy that, Apollo," Karl's voice came through. "ETA, five minutes."
Kara laid back on the rock beneath her, the warmth of it against her back as she stared up at the sky once again. Birds around her were chirping, a sound that she had never thought about never hearing again. It was like wading rivers, or the smell of dew in the morning. She used to long for the cold emptiness of space, the freedom it symbolized, the lack of restraints of gravity. Now, she wanted nothing more than to be grounded, to feel the solidity of the earth beneath her feet, the reality of her world.
Re: 2/2
She heard the sound of the engines approaching as Helo did a broad sweep of the area with the raptor. She raised her face up to the rushing wind that had picked up and waved up at him.
"Hiya, 'Buck," he said in her ear. "Looks like you are way off the reservation."
She flipped him off before rolling up her map. "Are you here to give me a ride or what?" she asked through the comm.
"Nearly on bingo fuel," he chuckled. "But I think you can make it from here. Apollo, Helo. Got a 20 on Starbuck. She's half a click south of base camp position."
"Copy that, Helo. Starbuck, come on home."
"Yes, Sir," she snapped off a salute he couldn't see and jumped from her rock, heading in the direction that she now knew to be right.
In no time at all, she saw the clearing through the trees, and the base camp just beyond. Lee was coming towards her, catching up with her just within the tree line. He swept her into his arms and kissed her firmly.
"Nice to see you too, Major," she said with a smile before kissing him back.
"What took you so long?"
"I guess you lost me,"she said with a playful grin as he kissed her neck, his hands wandering possessively. "Hey, shouldn't we go back to camp or something?"
"No," he stopped and looked at her seriously. His eyes took on a momentary panic. "And I can't lose you. Do you understand? Next time, I'm coming with you."
She didn't like it when he looked at her like that...like his entire world revolved around her and he would be lost without her. Sam would look at her like that. But not Lee. He was stronger than that. Or at least, he used to be.
She hugged him then, lightly kissing his temple. "I'm here." And trying to lighten the mood, she waggled her eyebrows suggestively at him. "Now you can have your way with me."
"Listen, whatever you guys end up doing, could you please do it off comms?" Helo's voice piped up in their ears.
They laughed at that. "Common, Helo. You know you're a sneaky little perv that would love to listen in," Kara quipped.
"Please, 'Buck. I have something better at home. Don't need to listen to you two," Helo retorted, sounding slightly insulted.
"Who knows, maybe Sharon would appreciate you picking up some pointers," Kara was saying even as Lee shook his head.
"Thanks, Helo. Apollo and Starbuck out."
They turned off their comms then, and Lee took Kara's hand, walking side by side with her to base camp.
This was grounding to her, having someone that depended so much on her continued existence. Maybe it was something they'd have to work at still. Lee was stronger than this. but after everything he'd lost, she could give him this even for a little while.
Kara squeezed his hand tighter and walked on.

Sorry for the prolonged absence. RL stuff and a self-imposed ban on pure K/L stuff has kept me away. Just wanted to come in, wave and say what a great topic! And what fantastic commentary.
Will be back later in the week, but in the meantime, a big, giant hug to all y'all. *MWAH*

Kara grabs for the remote as Lee opens the door, but not quite fast enough.
"Was that...Indiana Jones? In Lego form? With a little Lego whip?" he asks, unshouldering his bag and setting it down.
"It's got sentimental value!" Kara says defensively, clutching the controller in one hand. "I used to play it in college. You know, people say it's the weakest game of the Lego franchise, but frankly, I gotta disagree. The graphics may not have the sophistication of the later games, and you don't have all the play options of the Lego Harry Potter, but Lego Indy, he just does it for me."
"Ohhh-kay," Lee says. "Do I need go find somewhere else to be for a couple of hours?" He sits down on the couch beside her, taking all the threat out of his words.
"Not like that." Kara punches him in the shoulder, gesturing with the controller in her other hand. "It just reminds me of the good times, all breakin' shit into bits all night and skipping class. But you try telling a serious gamer you like the Lego series. Seriously. You can't tell anybody. Tell them you caught me singing that song from the end of Portal instead."
"These aren't good times?" Lee asks, backtracking in the conversation.
Kara finally puts down the controller. "You're an idiot, Adama."
"I know," he says happily.
"I'm glad you're home, though," she says, leaning in to kiss him hard. "Come on. Let's go see if you can press A and B at the same time."
"If you're lucky, maybe I'll find the X button," he tells her, following her to the bedroom.
She laughs, delighted. "One up, Adama!"

One Step at a Time (1/2)
It had been so long since there had been any parties. Well, it had been so long since there had been anything to celebrate. Finding a planet to settle on, seemed to merit a party, complete with fresh booze made from some local berries brewed up in Chief's still.
Lee sat with his cup of liquor surveying the people around him. He hadn't felt so much joy and warmth in one place in such a long time--music and laughter and hell, even the Cylons seemed to be having a great time. Looking around, though, several absences were painfully apparent. His father and Roslin leaving the most prominent gap--the two people who had led this fleet for so long, one having left this world, the other taking time away to grieve. And more, all the people who did not get the chance to make it this far--pilots, civilians... Dee. Lee took another long swig from his glass.
The strangest absence, however, was one Kara Thrace. Lee had been so sure he'd seen her not ten minutes ago...well less seen and more heard, her laughter ringing out louder than the crowd as she danced with Karl, making jokes to Sharon about stealing her husband. (Or maybe it just seemed that way to him.) Lee left his log perch, striding off into the night.
The noise of the party had long faded into the distance when he finally found Kara, perched on a rock formation and staring up into the night sky. Her hand was clenched around her old Top Gun stein. She didn't seem to notice as Lee approached and settled down next to her, but didn't startle when he spoke. "Better hang on to that," he said, a wry smile crossing his lips. "It's a regular piece of history."
"Damn straight." Kara grinned. "They're gonna put it in a frakking museum one of these days."
Lee scrubbed a hand over his face. "Vices of Galactica's pilots. Your mug will go right next to the stack of skin mags from Hot Dog's locker."
"Hex's fuzzy handcuffs?" Kara supplied with a laugh.
"Thumper's candy bar wrappers." Lee shook his heads. "Lords, I swear, he still has some. How did he pull that off?"
"A really good hiding place." Kara lifted the mug to her lips once again. "I never found it."
The laughter settled away, leaving nothing but the sounds of the party in the distance and the wilderness at night. After a moment, Kara set the mug aside, twisting to face Lee, her voice low. "What about you, Lee? What's your vice?"
One Step at a Time (2/2)
And then there was no distance anymore, just his lips pressed to hers. But it wasn't the same as last time. Back on New Caprica, Lee remembered the frantic rush, the feeling of time running out, the need to feel skin on skin now before he lost his nerve, lost his chance, lost her. This kiss was meandering, finding its way. He'd never kissed Kara Thrace like this before, had never imagined kissing Kara Thrace like this before. But right then and right there, it felt right. It felt like he still had something to hold on to.
When they finally broke apart after gods only knew how long, Kara stared at him with her lips pursed. She studied his face before she spoke, voice hushed. "What was that?"
"I don't know...but it felt like something." Lee shifted, moving closer, leaning against Kara and letting her lean his head on him. "So... what do we do now?"
"Beats the hell out of me." Kara rolled her eyes to the sky and laughed, soft but bright and Lee realized that they weren't running out of time, there was no need to push or to rush...because they had given themselves enough hell, he wasn't sure what he would do if he lost this too.
"Well, we'll figure it out. We've got all the time in the worlds now."
Kara pushed herself to her feet, stretching. "And who do we have to thank for that?"
"You're going to milk that for everything it's worth, aren't you?"
"I found a frakking planet, Lee. And I found a good one too."
"That remains to be seen."
"Oh, frak you." She caught his face with both hands and kissed him like lightning before racing off towards the settlement. It took Lee a moment to realize what had just happened before he took off after her; the space between them was closing one step at a time.

I got tired of waiting.
Wondering if you were ever coming around.
My faith in you was fading-
When I met you on the outskirts of town.
And I said...
Lee save me, I've been feeling so alone.
I keep waiting, for you but you never come.
Is this in my head, I don't know what to think-
He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring and said...
Marry me Kara, you'll never have to be alone.
I love you, and that's all I really know.
I talked to dad -- go pick out a white dress
It's a love story, baby just say... yes.
Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh.
'cause we were both young when I first saw you
