no_takebacks | DPP: Your K/L Origin Story

I'm kind of an odd duck in that I didn't start shipping K/L until after the end of the series - way after the end of the series. They actually both irritated me a ton the first time through, I have to admit and even now, I find I like them much better post-canon when they have time for each other and time to heal. I wound up writing Staying Solid (http://plaid-slytherin.livejournal.com/155489.html) (which really, really needs a sequel - I should get on that). I couldn't have done it without

deborah_judge's The Return (http://deborah-judge.livejournal.com/222899.html), which got me thinking about them and then

the_applecart sustained my interest and here I am. I find they really complement my OTP (so many parallels between K/L and Bill/Saul) and that drew me in, too, writing them all together as a family.

I'm ashamed to say that the first time I saw pilots together in the brig, I rolled my eyes, thinking, "oh, so this is who they're going to hook her/him up with.".

They sold that scene well enough that I actually liked the prospect of an eventual pairing-off, and I liked them more and more through the miniseries, but I didn't realise I'd gone full-tilt into shipper territory until the scene in my icon.

I mean, everyone else was PDA-ing like it's going out of fashion, but pilots, just looking into each other's eyes and holding hands (aka handshake) and unable to let themselves even hug?

GUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHH.

As for how I got into BSG in the first place, it all started because Joss Whedon said he loved it, and In Joss I Trust.

Well, that and one of my favourite Firefly fanfic writers also wrote quite a bit of BSG fic - I was already interested in the show, but took the plunge because I wanted to be able to read her BSG fic.

In my early fandom days, I used to hang out on forums, but there was way too much pilots hate there so I just quit fandom altogether - I think I found this comm through a link from

taragel last year, and it was the best discovery ever :)

I watched Katee in Bionic Woman first, and was very impressed by how she stole the whole show. And I'd heard good things about BSG, and I knew Jacob at TWOP recapped it (and I loved his American Idol recaps) and I read the big EW article on Katee and figured I'd give it a shot, even though I really don't like SciFi stuff much. And I fell for Starbuck right away, by the end of the mini I knew she was totally my girl. The smirky attitude, the toughness, the crazy ballsy bravery, plus the vulnerability in all her scenes with/about Lee? Oh yeah I was all over it.

I was a Kara fan right from the start and loved her scenes with Lee especially, but I was mostly a Kara fangirl and was ambivalent on Lee for a really long time. The end of Scar when he finishes her toast is the moment it really clicked for me, but I can't say I ever really had much fannish interest in shipping her with anyone else. (After the finale, I became far far more Kara/Lee focused.)

But anyway, back to watching the show, started/finished around April of 2008. I had started an LJ a few months earlier just to begin journaling again and so I started seeking out comms, and commenting at SASA HQ and Canadiangirl_86's journal and then Beyond Insane and then reading fic and found my way to YouTube fanvids. It was the summer of obsessive fic reading. I can't possibly remember the very first one I read, but I think that brynnmck's Detour was very near the beginning. And is still one of my most favorites of all K/L fics. (THE BANTER! THE KISSING! LOVE!)

I wrote my first ficlet in July-- a pre-mini convo between Lee & Zak about Kara, which Lee suffers through uncomfortably, and then gets even more uncomfortable when Kara comes in and flirts with him. Hee. I wrote a couple more fics for Wisteria's summer bsg porn battle--including Driving Lessons which was kind of my real entrance to fandom, because then people found me and started friending me and I had comments! And uh, never really looked back after that. Hee.

Yes! I'd read his Doctor Who stuff and when I started watching BSG (fall '10) and had no one to talk to about it, I'd just read the recaps after each episode :) (LJ came later!)

I know a lot of people find him...problematic, and sometimes I think he's way off-base but I truly enjoyed reading his takes on each episode because they're so far out of the normal recap realm that it's almost like reading a completely different fanwork based on the episode. Hee.

Oh God, Jacob. His recaps got so rambly by Season 3, they took longer to read than the actual episode did to watch (and TWoP's recap layout is a bitch to navigate because you simply can't see it all on one page), and half of it was stuff that had nothing to do with the show.

I loled SO HARD when I came to his Daybreak recaps - he luuuuurved the entire mess that was Season 4 (and loved it with extreme determination), and then was so bitterly disappointed by DB, it was hilarious.

That's totally his thing though--he'd go way off topic in his AI recaps also on the craziest rants and they were so entertaining and spot on about the reality-whoreness to AI for the most part.

I was saying to embolalia above that I know his rants are sometimes sexist/misogynistic/problematic but at the time I just mostly enjoyed reading them like almost crack-fic/weird AU interpretations of the actual episodes.

I guess because I didn't start off following BSG on a week-by-week basis, reading his reviews one after another can just be so....grating. And flat-out exhausting, too - especially when each page has like two little paragraphs of his rambling and you have to click through 40-something pages to get to the end.

(and his Cally hate, I couldn't with it. She's not my favourite character, but the way he ranted, it's like she was single-handedly responsible for genocide, forced abortions and puppy-kickings)

I loved how long they were. But then, I always am very "MORE IS MORE!" about things I enjoy.

Yes the Cally hate was baffling. Hell, the SHOW's Cally hate was pretty baffling too. I will never get over "smelled like cabbage." UGH.

lol yeah, me too. And I liked his recaps up to the end of Season 2, but he got progressively worse with each season after that. Who knows what he'd have been like had BSG had a Season Five, lol.

I remember Maelstrom was the weirdest.

I don't get this at all either! I love Cally; she's my favorite character I don't write about (which... is kind of faint praise, but I really can't think of anything to write about her because she doesn't normally interact with the characters I write about.)

I've tended to avoid the non-LJ portions of BSG fandom and I can kinda see why.

I like Cally too but I haven't written about her much either. I did make her a little sister type (not actually related) to Lee in a Grease 2 crossover and she was dating Zak in the epilogue of a long Academy fic series I wrote once. Hmm. I think that's really it, aside from a few bit parts in canon-set pieces.

Yeah, I like Cally too, in-show - and re: avoiding non-lj portions of BSG, that's a wise decision. Fandom outside of lj.....can be nice sometimes, but is also overrun by assholes.

I first got into BSG spring 2010. I first found Lee and Kara so cocky, but by the end of the mini, I loved them both. As a shipper, I'm more into Kara/Leoben (in case you didn't know ;D) But I'm also a multishipper for anyone Kara and Lee is so, so, wonderful <3 (and let's face it, hot! And cute!) My first fic was Kara/Leoben, second a Kara/Leoben/Sam fic (on New Caprica) and then an epic multishippage fic (made up of several fics) with Kara/Lee at its head (it's still to be finished about 200,000 words in - Kara's got pregnant and I'm still to deal with that :/)
Finally, I got introduced to this corner of fandom by Mserrada!

I didn't watch BSG until after the series ended, and so watching the mini I saw the brig scene, recognized the names, thought "this is who I'm supposed to ship?" skeptically, and, well, YEAH.

I love that so many of us seem to have reacted to pilots the exact same way, lol.

I watched BSG February of 2010. I really like the chemestry of Lee and Kara from the brig scene but it was the scene when Lee comes back from the dead that sold me. I just remember thinking "She loves him" and sighing happily.

I found fandom and fic as soon as I realized there was no way K/L would be the couple I wanted them to be, the couple who knew just how poorly two people fit in a hospital bed. It was another three months before I actually said anything or wrote anything. The first thing I wrote was for a ficathon here at N_T.

Sometimes I can't believe that scene became teh mess that is canon. I mean, how can you watch that scene, the mini, hell all of S1 and not end up with something better? Arg!!!

It's not even as if I hate canon, but between contrived obstacle alternative hookups (and don't even get me started on the whole 'reason to live' business) and poofs, I definitely have days when I do.

Thank goodness for fic, is all I can say.

I could take the contrived obstacle hook-ups if not for the poof and I could have taken the poof if the sacrifice had been for each other instead of all those other reasons to live. Basically if the whole rest of the story had been different. ;)

I could have taken anything if they'd just left Kara in that field. We already know she's a dead girl walking/angel/whatever, she doesn't need to poof for a point to be made!

It's funny, I didn't think there was anything wrong with the storyline when I watched for the first time. (Well, I did get tired of it because it was boring to me but that was because those weren't the characters I cared about.) So yeah, I can kind of see how that might happen...

Oh, don't get me started! I hate how they barely interact in S4 and I can't shake the idea that we were meant to think Bill never quite got used to him being a Cylon and thus things were never the same. :(

The parallels are endless I replace Bill with Lee and try to figure out how Lee would leave Kara after she came back from the dead. I mean really!?!

Last April "Doctor Who" was winding up and BBCA started airing commercials for "BSG". It was the same day, the same time - plus there were TWO episodes a night. So we gave it a try (watching glowing back sex with your dad = awkward).

When did you start shipping Kara/Lee?
For about a second during the brig scene, but then Kara had the line about what Zac was to her and I put it out of my mind.

But then half way through the season I got an inkling, then the water fight happened and I was like, "OH! So they are thinking about this?" and then the blue dress happened and I was like, "OMG! They are doing this!" and then the next episode started with sexy times and I was, "OMG! OMG! OMG! HAPPY DANCE!" and then it was Baltar and I was like, "WTF?! I WILL CUT A BITCH!!!"

Well, LJ is my homeboy; but I was very careful when I first stared looking for fics, since I had only seen the first season.

I started watching BSG after *numerous* people had recommended it - I'd held off for years just because it sounded like the kind of thing I'd be addicted to (hint: I WASN'T WRONG). I liked Kara all along, but my first real shipper moment was the end of Hand of God, when she hands him a drink and a cigar and UST. And then Colonial Day and KLG and no looking back :)

The first fic I wrote was Kara gen during the Pegasus arc - the first Kara/Lee I wrote was my premini piece, Prologue, which was intended to be followed with canon scenes running through all four seasons. I have tons of notes on that, and still mean to write it, but that was when I discovered LJ and ship swaps and comms and other things to write :)

I'd actually had an LJ in high school (that still exists! it's weird to see what I thought about at 16) but I started this account last April because there wasn't much activity around BSG on ff.net and I followed links from some of KAG's stories over there to their unabridged versions here...and then found the rest of LJ.

Yeah, I remember finding fics on lj via tamsibling and dannicawebb and a couple of others - lj is just generally better fic-quality-wise, and even when the same fic is crossposted the layouts here make for easier reading.

How did you first get into BSG?
Well I went to an exhibition in Paris last year whose topic was "Science and Fiction". It was a remarkable exhibition whose goal was to draw parallels between the most famous SciFi books, movies and TV shows and the actual state of the science when they were written/shot. And in this exhibition, there was a "real sized" plane with "Starbuck" written on it... And a bit behind a gigantic screen with lots a videos, including one with this plane and a blond girl screeming gleefully. I was with two friends, we loved it and then I said "you know, I actually think that I've got this show at home - one of my friends told me to watch it 2 months ago". Well, we went back home, and spent the night watching the 1st season :D

Who were you drawn to first?
Difficult to say. Cally, the Chief, Helo and Sharon I think... Although Lee and Kara came quickly after !

When did you start shipping Kara/Lee?
Easy for me to answer this one ! During the 1st episode, when they argue in front of Starbuck's plane, because Lee wants her to take the stims. Best scene ever !! (especially when the chief rolls his eyes at the end). For me, it was obvious at that point.

How did you get over to the fandom and this corner of it?
I've been reading fanfiction for a long time now (the way I learnt English !), so I quite naturally started looking immediately for fics on BSG. As for LJ, I think I got it through Kag523, as she was posting regularly on FFN, but I wanted to read the complete version of her fics ;) And that's how I stumbled upon you all.

What was the first fic you read or wrote?
Can't remember !!! But my best bet would be one by Hackaddict/Mystic83 (still addicted to her fics and still hoping, one day, that others will appear... Yes, exactly like I hope that Starbuck did not really go "poof" at the end).

that stims scene, it always makes me smile. I watched Season 1 right after watching the miniseries, and for a newly inducted shipper, that scene is THE most delightful. And it's so nice to see a new face (well, icon :) ) in here :)

BSG has the best fic of all the fandoms I've ever been in, though - I keep repeating myself but it's true. It helps that I have such top-notch material with which to soothe the heartache of the poof.

I had the (apparently canonical for this community) reaction to the initial brig scene of "I can see where *this* is going"--but it's actually really fast that you realize that you *can't*--and then way later in canon when you realize they were always going to screw you.

I watched the whole thing last summer, after it aired. Been thinking about it lately because it was this time last year that my bf and I started, and am kind of itching for it. I had read Jacob's reviews--lots of them, but I read them devotedly, including reading his Gossip Girl reviews instead of ever watching the show--and it was the hardest thing ever not to read ahead for what happened to the pilots, but instead watch the show at the pace my boyfriend was capable of (an episode, at most two, a night? ugh). They really eclipsed almost all of the other plotlines of the show, although any scene with Laura Roslin is a good scene in my book.
