I think it's just more of a self preservation thing? I mean who really wants to lose a limb, you know? Plus, I think poor guy's in total shock.

Yeah true, just seems like he'd rather die than lose his leg. Guess you're right though, he's probably in a lot of shock. Surprised he's not passed out after all that blood loss.

I kind of hate that line because it was so cheesy that I legit started laughing the first time I saw it. Thought they must have been kidding...
