DPP: Fanon aka Tie Me Up With Tropes

Welcome to this week's DPP, everyone! I'm usually all over the discussion of canon and I cheerfully admit it (can never get it out of my head), but today, I thought we'd talk about fanon instead.

We're very, very lucky to have a fandom that is a positive treasure trove of amazing fic, but today is all about discussing the tropes that we find in pilotfic. To name just a few:

1. Academy!pilots (though there haven't been too many of these since Daybreak)
2. Lee has a stick up his ass
3. Flying is like frakking for pilots (my personal favourite**)
.....and many, many more.

Now here is the question, Shipper Nation: what are the tropes you observe in BSG fic, and what do you think of them? Got any favourites (ones bordering on being kinks, even)? Any tropes you avoid, either while writing your own fic, or which bug you while you're reading someone else's? Or even any theories on how they came about? Tell us all about it!

(and if anyone has examples of fics that employ a trope well, or use a much-disliked trope in a way that does justice to pilots, feel free to rec away!)

To the heart and soul of fandom!

Hi everyone, I'm Claudia and I'll be with you this week. If last week DPPs and the rewatch are any indication, it seems 2012 has started well in our little corner of the world. That makes me truly happy. :)

Fic is a fundamental part of fandom. More than thinky discussions and vids and manips and all those other lovely activities and games we all enjoy so much, it’s the stories that keep the flame alive. They fix what canon did wrong, they spell out what canon only implied, they fill in the blanks canon left behind, they go where canon would never dare go, they throw canon out the window and create whole new universes where our beloved characters can do pretty much anything.

Perhaps the buzz has dwindled, as I have sometimes heard people regret. But what we may now lack in numbers we certainly make up for in talent and creativity. We, as a fandom, are truly privileged to have so many amazingly talented storytellers amongst us. Some are not active anymore but their creations still inspire and move us (daphnaea , stars_like_dust, just to name a couple).Like Starbuck, they won’t be forgotten. Some continue to keep our favorite characters and our ship alive with their unrelenting creativity (sci_fi_shipper ,taragel, kag523 and so many others ). And let’s not forget the new voices out there. They have just arrived but have already left their mark (apodixis and letterstonorah , for example).

We often rec their stories time and time again. As we should, of course. Each and every one of them has a unique voice and , at least for me , it is impossible to pick a favorite. That’s not what today is about. Today is about praising and being thankful. These amazing writers are the heart and soul of fandom. Without them we wouldn’t be here.

So, as we begin a new week in a still brand new year, what I propose today is that we take a moment to thank them for their past creations, to cheer them on their present endeavors and to help energize them for a new year of writing, creativity and pilot loving. How? Think of an unforgettable writer. Initiate a thread dedicated to said writer . Tell us why they are unforgettable and send them your love. (You don’t need to rec any of their stories, but if you feel the need to do so, nobody will complain. ;)

DPP: Supportive Sunday

Hello everyone :) I hope you're all having a lovely Sunday :) A couple of housekeepingy bits before I reveal today's DPP.

Over at yesterday's post there's a lot of excellent prompts so please do fire up your muse and see if you can write a response to one of them. The only ficlet we have so far in response is here by kdbleu, so please do drop in, read it, and leave her a comment in response :)

There are still discussions continuing and a couple of new secrets appearing on Friday's Confessional DPP so if you have the time, do wander back over there and check it out and keep joining in. The discussions are incredibly interesting.

Today's DPP is Supportive Sunday. This is twofold really.

Please do share the things that you do within fandom to be supportive to the people in it - go into detail if you feel like it as to why you do what you do.

Say something supportive in this post. You can direct it at the members of the community in general, or specific members if you would rather - maybe if the person in question has produced something/is responsible for something that you feel is particularly noteworthy.

So go forth and make your fellow shippers feel the love :)

DPP: Tragic Love Stories

Today's question is as follows - would we love pilots as much as we do if they'd been a couple who hadn't got themselves royally screwed over by cosmic bad luck (a.k.a. the perversity of Ronald D. Moore)? To make a little more sense of the above question, I guess I should rephrase it: would we still care as much as we do about pilots, or be as active as we are here in trying to remember the good bits and lamenting the bad ones and imagining the what-could-have-beens, if the show had left them in a good place two years ago? (i.e. together). Or even if it had given them any clear resolution at all?

I don't honestly think that pilots would have been any less epic and heart-wrenching and beautiful if Kara hadn't been forced to go poof in that field. But in the past, I've found that leaving characters - not just romantic pairings - in a happy place often means I find it easier to metaphorically lay them to rest, so to speak, especially when there was a very real fear that they could end their story in a bad way (like Harry Potter. Or Buffy. Or the entire cast of Firefly, who very definitely did not all get happy endings but at least had what felt like an ending to that particular part of their story). And that just didn't happen with Lee and Kara in BSG. So what say you, people? Are we (at least in part) driven to fandom action by the fact that pilots got a raw deal in canon, or am I just out of my tree?

DPP: The make it fit fic-meme weekend of fun!!!!

Morning ladies and fanfolks :D (Well, it's almost afternoon here) I am posting early for two reasons - 1) I am going out. and 2) MOAR TIME FOR FICTIONS!!! which is always a good thing.

This is my final DPP this week and it is, indeed, yes, it is, a FIC MEME. An IN CANON fic meme inspired by some of the comments from the week's DPP discussions, and some interesting ideas from yesterday's missing scenes wishes.

The rules are simple and few:

1) Post prompts!!

2) FILL prompts!!

3) All fills MUST be wholly supported by canon - you CANNOT CHANGE THE OUTCOME OF THE SHOW IN ANY WAY. If you do you will be PUNISHED! (I'm not quite sure how, but there will be frosty looks and strongly worded letters involved I can tell you that much for sure)

4) Have fun!!!!

5) BE AWESOME!!!

And it's as simple as that. Obviously it would be nice if you could fill a prompt for every one you post, but I'm not going to impose it as a rule or anything because I feel like it discourages people from prompting, and we like prompts, so prompt freely and with abandon! Reckless Abandon (which is the title of an erotica novel my mother owned when I was young which I read when I was far too young and didn't understand AT ALL) if you so choose.

HAPPY WEEKEND EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!! (tiny exclamation marks for giant text makes me unusually happy) I am officially passing the DPP wheel over to the next lunatic.

DPP: In the spaces in between

Hey guys, it's Friday!!! Woooooooooooooooooop!!!!

I've had an awesome week of fandom fun with all of you guys, we've talked about imaginary stuff, pilots set to music, pilots as other people and fics that make us click. We've swooned and squeed over Bamceps and the incredible bromance of Fassbender and Macavoy, we've reccomended our favourite fics and hopefully people have had the opportunity to read some things they haven't read before, and generally, I like to think, we've had an all-round good time. Thanks everyone for playing along, I've had a blast :) I've got one more post set up for tomorrow, but today is my last discussiony one, the weekend is something different.

So today I thought we'd talk about things we would have liked to see, missing scenes that never were sort of thing. Are there questions you think are unanswered? Are there moments that you wish we had been shown? And bear in mind this is not a fix-it, not a what would you have changed, I'm talking about scenes or conversations which have no overall change on canon or the outcome of the show, but that you feel would have made that episode better, made a later scene make more sense, or would just have really liked to have seen.

For instance -

I really wish that we had seen more of their interaction in Scar - I want to know what happened between them kissing in the rec room to stripping in the bunk room, and I know that it's fairly obvious what happened in the general sense, but I am greedy when it comes to pilots actually getting it on, and wish we had seen the whole sequence, seen how they reacted to the initial kiss, how they got themselves to the bunkroom, I just want MORE!

I also want to see more of the scene at the end of Resurrection Ship II where he drops the "I didn't want to come back" bomb, because I really want to know how she reacted to that, what she said. And I know that there's lots of really good fic that hypothesise the outcome, but obviously it became a point of estrangement between them given the following episodes, and I just would like to know what actually happened.

DPP: Treasure-Trope

Hello hello my fangirl friends :) What an interesting week we have had so far. Yesterday we discussed our wacky ideas involving Pilots in OTHER stories, and there were some interesting suggestions, some awesome manips, some exciting fic reccomendations, and lively discussion besides.

And of course there was the obligatory Fassavoy gif hijack :P

Today is all about your favourite tropes. I know we had a trope based discussion on Monday, but this is slightly different. I've been going through my delicious bookmarks trying to get them into some kind of order, and I'm noticing certain trends.

So my question for you is this:

What are the tropes/categories if you're not clear on tropitude that will almost guarantee you will read a fic? What does an author need to put in the genre/notes section to make you clicky clicky without even really reading the summary? Tell me what your weaknesses are, and rec some of your favourites if you like.

DPP: A song will outlive all sermons

Howdy :)

So yesterday was fun, we talked about our favourite UFT's and by the way, if any of you missed the latter portion of the discussion which was directed mainly by nazkey , amaliak , and pali167 you should go check it out, it is FASS-TASTIC!

Today we're gonna talk a little bit about music, even though I'm certain that it's has been done before. It strikes me that pilots fandom is relatively short on song-fics, where most fandoms feed on them. And ok, I'm not the world's biggest fan of song-fics, my experience of them is that they are often clumsy and made lazy by virtue of being able to rely on lyrics to say what you want to without having to think of how you word it for yourself. I am however, interested in fic inspired by music, that doesn't necessarily use the song as part of the story.

Now, I know a lot of you guys are really into poetry and have written many wonderful fics inspired by/based around poetry. But what about songs?

Do you guys have favourite pilots songs? Have you written fics that were inspired by particular pieces of music/songs? Have you written actual song-fics? Does anyone have songs that they wish someone would write pilots fic based around? It's a musical free for all!

And to get you started, here are a few songs that make me think of pilots.

DPP: We made it all up!

Well hey there folks! It would seem that I am in charge of driving the good ole DPP bus this week, I warn you I don't have a licence and this is my first time behind the wheel, so you might wanna buckle up, but rest assured, if there is a bomb on board, I am all over that.

So last week we had a thinky thoughts kind of week thanks to trappermcintyre with lots of good historical musings and psychoanalysis and whatnot. I thought this week we'd do something a bit lighter, partly because I am not cool enough to come up with thinky thoughts DPP ideas, and partly just because, well, I think everyone's a bit tired and in need of some Piloty respite.

So, without further ado, except for the part where I said without further ado, let's get on with the show.

Today's post is all about one of my favourite things about fandom. Unsupported Fic Tropes. You all know them, we all use them, they exist in every fandom the world over. I personally love them, there's something fun about realising that every person who ever writes fic for a certain fandom employs these ideas and interactions without ever having seen them on the television.

Don't know what I mean? Did you ever hear Kara call Lee Flyboy? Did you ever see Helo give Pilots a friendly shove towards each other? Did you ever really see our two beloveds compete in a viper? I mean, they flew and fought and taunted and stuff, but I never heard any of that "I can outfly you any day" kind of trash talk that is the delightful staple of so many Academy!Pilots fics.

So that's today, Unsupported Fandom Tropes day. What are your favourites? What are your least favourites? What are your thoughts on them in general? I'd love to hear.

And, as is obviously always the case when it comes to DPP, if you feel the need to express your love for UFT's through the application of spontaneous fiction, well loved reccomendations, picatures or gif-times or any other kind of thing that makes you happy, well that's what the comments are for. :)

DPP: Would You Like Fries With That?

So pressdbtwnpages is new to the fandom and was wondering recently where all the AU fic is. Though we have a lot of fix-it and Academy variations of AUs, her inquiry was: Where are the Barista!AUs? Where are the office-setting fics?

We've talked before about how there isn't a ton of slash for this fandom or even a lot of kinkfic for pilots (Angst is their kink, baby). But why do you think there hasn't been a lot of Earth/reality-based AUs? Where's the silly stuff like pilots trying out for American Idol or wing!fic or the like? What tropes do you see other fandoms doing a lot of that we don't have for pilots? What would you like to see?
